What is the best stuff to take off black melted boot marks on my pipes? We came out of a resturant yesterday and I was sick when I seen my pipes! My wife was quick to say she didn't do it but the location of the marks made it obvious! Lol. One guy told me I could go to the HD place and they make something that looks like a tube of lipstick(couldn't recall the name) that would take it right off. I've never heard of any such thing and if HD has it, I'll probably have to finance it! Any suggestions will be appreciated. Oven cleaner??? Thanks

I've used oven cleaner and it works really well. Be careful not to get it on any surface other than the chrome! Honda chrome polish and a little elbow grease works well, too. And you shouldn't have to take out an equity loan to get it.

That's why I use Goof-Off, it will remove just about anything from anything and do it without damaging the paint. You don't really want to get EasyOff on your hands, the Goof Off will burn a cut but not your skin. And it dries quick, just make sure the pipes are cool regardless of what you use, but I've found GoofOff to be a great all-around solvent/cleaner. In fact, I removed a food stain from my son-in-law's French silk tie without damage....one he received from his boss so was kinda important to wear it from time to time, especially when invited to dinner.

I've used WD-40 a couple of times.
Also used brake cleaner after taping off the area real good. It was all I had and I was tired of looking at it.

Right after riding, put some car wax on a rag and rub the area. After a couple of treatments, it'll look like new.

Goleeeee, REALLY?? Yeah I know polish with elbow grease will take it off! Thanks for everyone's help and input on all these products. I was actually hoping someone may have tried the product that looks like a tube of lipstick and could tell me the name of it. According to several people, you take the "lipstick" mark over the spot/streak and it comes right off. Sounds too good to be true and lot easier!!

LOL......didnt mean to insult anyones intellegence (it was a joke) but the polish doenst take lots of elbow grease.......the black marks just come off......dont know how much easier we need things. Now if its full on melted rubber, that is a different story.......I have had that problem, and I used a stronger metal polish than simple chrome cleaner BUT it was a lot of work......but boot marks easy with chrome polish

if the pipes are hot, wipe off the big globs with a soft rag. Then, nevr dull chrome wadding (available in the shiny can at most auto stores) quickly and softly wiped will remove the smudges. You'll get a bunch of sizzling and avoid contact as your skin will come off if you hit the hot pipes. http://www.eagleone.com/pages/products/product.asp?itemid=1006&cat=5006I believe almost any chrome polish on a rag will remove the rubber if the pipes are running temperature hot. I've tried the oven spray and that works too. Just be careful with contacting anything other than the pipes. I dabbed it on with a rag rather than risking overspray onto the paint and plastic. goo luck....

with a cold pipe, i'll get some mineral spirits, and a very fine steel wool, cleans it right up. i often thought that it would scratch the hell out of the chrome, but it hasn't yet. i've done this about 5 times now.

I use bronze wool to remove minor rusty spots. Then tried it on the pipes and was pretty pleased.

One of the perks to my 5 inch stacks - they don't get hot. You can lay your bare hand directly on them, anywhere forward of the glasspack outlet inside (about 26" back from the forward edge of the stack). In fact I use them as a hand warmer at stoplights if I forgot my electric gloves on a tool-cold day. No melting of anything on the chrome.

That's what I do. Car wax on a HOT pipe. tip: fold the towel up into A LOT of layers. Car wax is a GREAT conductor of heat! Jabba

Thanks again guys for all your help! It was caked on hard melted rubber, not just a smear or marks like you might see at your kickstand. That that comes of easy with wax or even Goo Gone. I've used just about everything people did suggest, from Goo Gone, kerosene, oven cleaner , steel wool and then polish it's finally off. I glad to know it can come off with wax on a hot pipe, I would have thought the opposite since you can't wax a car/bike in direct sunlight. I will try that if I get a light mark.
