Where'd old times go?

Frisco, TX

« on: May 01, 2011, 07:24:59 AM »

                                 . . . KEEP COOL TOO!

I've been trying to figure out how to defeat the 'buffeting' effects (which are worse with a helmet) on my bike.

While visiting with Daniel at GOTF this year, he said all I needed were lower fork wind deflectors.  I'm thinking, that should be pretty simple, RIGHT!

So, I shopped the usuals and put together, what seemed to me, a nice addition to the front end without too much bulk.

Worked pretty darn good.  HOWEVER, on my 200 mile roundy round yesterday, I discovered "ENGINE HEAT"!

Holy Crap!  Why are my legs so hot!

I eliminated most of the turbulance from my helmet area but in doing so, I diverted the air which kept my lower extremeties comfortable.

    Now what Kimosabee?

OBTW - I don't like the bulk of Baker Air Wings.

Air Wings Bulky?   ???   Compared to a Valkyrie?   Grin

Oh well, there is another cure.  You could just admit that it's time to become another...

...tamed wild animal on a tamed Valkyrie.  They make 'em in fast black.

Not what you thought I was going to say? 2funny

Goal:  disrupt the wind enough to cut the turbulance while allowing the air to come through to keep me cool. . .   Hmmmmm

Which one of you 'Engineers' out there can tell me if drilling holes in my new deflectors will help or hurt?

How about drilling the holes at different angles and of different sizes to create a disruption in the air flow?  Shocked

I have been told that the height of your windshield has something to do with the buffeting. On my v65 I just adjusted the angle of it and it helped. Also my fullface helmet seems to be more noisy.

Tom, I use air wings and adjust the top part to help with the wind buffeting and the bottom part is left open in the summer to help with the heat.

I know, I know, you said you don't like the Baker's but..... Function follows form. They work. They work VERY well... I wouldn't be without them... Ya', they're big and ugly, but they're incredibly effective at what they're designed to do.

Yep.  That's a rattle-can paint job on those babies, believe it or not.  Kuryakyn has a lighting kit specifically for diffuser pinwheels that I'm thinking about adding.

They may not have the most graceful lines, but they are mostly clear, and what isn't clear is chrome.  To my eyes, they do less to disturb the lines of a Valkyrie than the fork-mounted deflectors I've seen.

I know someone with an extra pair who just might let you install them and take them for a test ride.

i agree,,my only beef with the big one....hottest bike in the sunmmer by far i have ever had...removed the so called "heat deflector" radiator pods but still to miserably hot without being spread eagle... Cheesy  i think the only way is the baker wings..had them on my standard for the same reason and worked great..looks like i'm going to be looking to put them on the i/s to. the reg ones, not the "pod mounted" ones.

You can put the regular ones on the I/S? I like the airings, but they did a number on my pods. I left the inners on the pods, but ditched the rest. Doesn't look good, but it stops the buffeting... Do the pods have to be removed for the regular wings?

thats a good point chris..i have removed my pods.and would never mess with those pod mounted wings anyway..the regular baker wings were great (jmho) on my standard...but they might also interfere with the i/s fairing...will be close..dont know anyone set up like this do you? i love the fairing and hard bags but was never a fan of the pods...have to keep them with the bike though...think i'll try to find the standard engine gaurds and radiator trim for her..maybee clean that area up good.

I appreciate everybody's input.   However, I've decided I'm probably going to have come up with my own design.

         Something simple yet effective.

I think this prototype my be the winner!

It has stability, aerodynamic designing and a speed-regulated, environmentally friendly cooling system.
