I've recorded several episodes of a show called, "Pawn Stars" about these guys who run a high end pawn shop in LA. Recently somebody brought in an old 70s model Husqvarna Enduro. I think is was in the 500cc range and 2 stroke.
I almost fell in the floor when Big Hoss explained that this thing was "as fast as any Harley."

What aint?

A busted up Harley has more sense than the self titled "Big Hoss".

It was a 1973 400.  I went up against them back in the day with my modified Yamaha 250 in open class motocross races.  They would dust most anything back then!

They turned it into a crazy hardtail bobber for almost $9000!  Asking price was to be $20K!   uglystupid2  I sure wouldn't pay that much for it...

I like that show too. Pops cracks me up and Rick seems to know what he's doin real well. How could the other two even be employable? Hire the handicapped? Big Hoss?!? dunce.
The Husky was very sad. I have a 71 250 and its a screamer. A 400 would be too much to handle on the street and overheating would be an issue too. I also had a hard time with it running outta gas. They paid their Hosshumper too much to get it without a tank-o-gas. Remember the 71 Buick?
Another over priced job. I realize its what will sell to the mainstream knuckleheads.
20K??? That has 3 Valks written all over it.

I watch the show a lot... Chum Lee is  Big Hoss's (Corey's) best friend growing up.. I think they keep him around for laughs on the show.  I suspect the producers encourage him to ask dumb questions and act stupid for the show.

Chum Lee is not his real name... it's a nick name...but I can't remember his real name.

If Big Hoss and Chum were real employees of mine, they both would have been fired a long time ago.

his name's Austin, saw a story about him on "E!", pretty sad that his father died right before the show got big.

A spin-off from Pawn Stars called "American Restoration" is about Rick who restores some of the pawn shop's junk.  Very interesting show.

Any time Rick challenges his son Big Hoss, Big Hoss wins.
The pawn shop is a capital venture, if you don't like them making money then you can give them the a 1000 for a 1000 item and start your own pawn shop. But you may have a hard time keeping the lights on..

I think they are fair. they bring experts in and a lot of times the item is worth more that the owner wanted in the first place.
You can always put it on ebay or on craigslist if you so desire

I'll second that they are way beyond fair, they often give more than people were asking. I don't get the fact that people have to have a little money today, not full price after ebay or the big auction house. They know a market I don't, somethings I could never sell around here and make $.
Did you guys catch the sale or buy room they mentioned once ? Items are held for 30 days to verify they are not stolen before resold.

I've seen it 3 or 4 times. Now, I admit I am a little bit anal, on projects I do, but I have to say, that I don't think they do a very good job, at least on the items I've seen. I mean, it's "ok", but JUST ok. And I'm sure they get premium pay, at the prices they talk about on the show.

But, I'm sure they're making money, and I'm not...what was that P. T. Barnum used to say?

I've watched the show quite a bit and I like the show... The money they give for the items that they buy on camera... is pretty fair... You can't expect them to pay retail as they are in the biz to make money too.  They've got to sit on it and re-sell when they can.  I like when they bring in the experts and they end up giving more than the customer initially expected to get.
The show I don't care for is "Hardcore Pawn"  That whole family is a bunch of rip off artists that you would be best to stay clear of...  Cool

I watch the show regularly, I know they are there to make money but think they may be making too much,lol...of course, they screw up just like the rest of us..take the cobra body the guy brought in and was asking 2K for...they brought in an expert and ended up paying 29K..should have given the 2k and then brought in the expert...a 27,000 mistake,,,then ended up with over 100K in it...AND THEY'LL STILL DOUBLE THEIR MONEY

I don't blame them for the prices they pay on camera. They're up front about the fact that they have to turn it around quick and will offer about 1/2 of their expected retail price. It a pawn shop.
The topper for me was the ugly spider broach that a lady wanted a few hundred dollars for. Turns out it was a Fabergé worth about $15,000 IIRR. I don't remember the exact price, but he told her then offerd her a little more than half of that. He paid several thousand for it when he could have had it for a couple of hundred.
I'm often amazed that some of the people will accept 50% of the value for an item they could get 80% of in an auction or on ebay. Makes me question some of the "family heirloom" claims.
