non valk related except while i'm dealing with this problem i can't be riding.
computer help needed: i was on a website i visit regularly, got up to get a drink, came back and my screen was black with the following:
"No boot sector on the internal hard drive
No bootable devices, strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for set up  utility"
F1 pops up the same info
F2 takes me to a set up page that is totally greek to me.
This does not sound good to me, is it a hard drive crash?
any options you computer gurus can offer.

Don't know if this will help you, but when I had my computer taken over from some malware or whatever, I killed all power to it to force it to shut off. I then reapplied power to it and opened it in "safe mode". At that time I ran a program which was free and saved my butt at superantispyware.com

Sounds like a hard drive crash to me!  You may be able to get it restarted, I did on mine, but if you do, back up everything to a new hard drive because its going to crash again.  After it crashed the second time for me I never did get it going again and I've been lovin my new Apple ever since.  Had enough with windows and a hardware malfunction gave me the reason to move on!  Good Luck

Sounds like your master boot record is toast. If so the data is probably gone as the record contains where all the data resides. If you can get a bootable CD, boot off if it instead and try to read your hard drive. If so, back up your data to an external drive and reinstall the OS and apps, then data. If you can't read your drive and have critical data, I might be able to send a program to try to recover data, but chances are slim.

Mine use to do that when the thing got too hot.

Let it cool down a while, as in power off the unit.

It should come back up.

If not do  a recovery, and that should do it.  Believe me if I can do it, anyone can, Computer Hillbilly Here.

Or it's off to Wally World.

I had a PC doing the same thing and need to reseat (unplug and plug back in) the power cable that connects to the HD and both ends of the data cable for the HD,  Have also had the Power supply fail with the same indication (must been a partial failure to boot at all).  Buying a new HD might be the fix but not guranteed.  Slim chance there may be a motherboard issue. If Malware/virus.... all of your hardware is still good but would likely need to reload software.

Sounds bad... Try "Safe Mode"  Unplug completely... wait 2-3 mins... When powering up, hold down the space bar until you get the black screen that will have printing asking you if you want to go to the last known good start-up...Hopefully you will recover the data... and then see if you can save your data to removalble disks in case you have to buy new stuff...
Is this a home PC or a laptop?

there are programs that will retrieve your data for you,, also if you get a boot disk you can boot off of it and then run off the old drive to transfer your old files and stuff,,,,the drive still has all the info,,you probably picked up a trojan that wiped out the boot sector of the drive is all...

Why is Apple better? Is it more expensive?

No. Macs are not more expensive as long as you compare them with something of equal quality. The operating system is the difference, no matter what the hardware specs may be.  It's extremely stable and there are no viruses or malware to be constantly worrying with.

I can't even imagine having to deal with that threat all the time. Running virus and malware protection software and keeping up with it, being afraid to click on a link or open an email and all that aggravation is just something that anybody should have to put up with. tickedoff

Windows vs Mac is one of the oldest and biggest arguments around and will be so for a long time to come. But millions of people are now figuring it out and switching to Macs.

But, like I said, to each his own.
