Eastbound 30 exit ramp between Fate and Royse City. Man and a woman no helmets.
Car exited in front of them and came to a stop on the left side of the road at the end of the ramp by the service road. The bike had slowed way down or there would have been more damage to the bike and the riders. He goes to pass the car on the right and she whips a right turn in front of the bike to go west down the two way service road. He locked it up and dumped the bike.
He had a cut over his eye where it looked like he hit the shield and some skinned up arms. She landed in the mud between the ramp and the service road. She would have been just fine but the lady in the car continues her turn and runs over her. Not sure if it was tire or just the under carriage that got her but alot of cosmetic damage to the side of her face and nose. One tuff chick, I thought I was gonna have to pin her down to keep her from kicking the crap out of the driver of the car. We got the bike stood up and out of the way and put the fairing back on it. Deputies showed up and we left.
NOW MY QUESTION IS: Can you legally exit on a ramp like that and turn back down the service road if the ramp is not designed for it.?

Don't think that is a legal turn.
Probably should have let the the injured rider have at the driver. Might have beat some good sense into her!

And now my question to YOU Chris: Why reference the 'no helmets'? Appears to be a simple observation. BUT RainMaker says - man who motorcycles without helmet has nothing to protect.

Why reference the 'no helmets'? That one probably best fits under the "if you have to ask, ..." category. I'm all about one's right to choose, but can't completely understand that choice. Especially by ones I care about. Just my $0.02. Now, back to . ( But if anything ever happens to you or yours (or any of my other buddies who don't wear helmets), I'll kill you.)

That is a somewhat strange ramp. The exiting traffic has the right of way to the oncoming traffic on the service road. There are no signs indicating no right turn, even though the ramp appears to only exit onto the Eastbound lane of the service road. I would never expect someone to turn right there either (almost a full U turn or a V turn!), so I would have had the same accident if it were me.

Exiting onto two lane service roads is like playing chicken or Russian roulette.... there is a short section of two way service road between San Marcos and Buda... right about where Cowboy Hinda is. The DOT keeps trying to make it one way... but the locals keep fighting it.
I'm with TXDot on this one.
Realistically, that is a VERY dangerous stretch. Used to be country out there... but now it ain't anymore... and Cabella's and the new hospital in Kyle have changed the landscape dramatically.
If you mix in a few out-of-towners who aren't paying attention (which is very, very likely) you have a free for all! I say ALL service roads should be one way unless you are talking about way out past Junction.
P.S.: The cager stopped on an exit ramp. Duh! Unexpected and I would expect illegal in Texas. Then when the MC slowed... she took that as a sign to go ahead and complete her clandestine act...
Pow... another biker down.

I truly enjoy riding my bike.
Some of what I enjoy about riding is the the scenery through the countryside, the smells that fill the air, the power under me and , YES, the wind in my hair.
To me riding a bike is exhilarating and offers a sense of freedom (that would be NON-CONFINEMENT).
I am fully aware of the possiblities and pitfalls from NOT wearing a helmet but I'm just glad that it's still a choice. MY choice. One of the few things the Government has not (yet) taken away from me is my freedom of choice when it comes to wearing a helmet when I ride in Texas.
Those of you who have ridden with me know that I DO sometimes wear a helmet. When its very cold, very hot or very wet...
I NEVER criticize anybody who wears a helmet. I'm just happy that they too are exercising their freedom of choice and are riding a motorcycle.
And that IS my opinion!
You have the right to ride without a helmet and I wish you the best as you do. Since I've been knocked off my motorcycle at highway speed and destroyed a helmet, not my head, then avoided a serious head injury when falling off at the RLAP in Houston, getting a concussion but not cracking my head open, I'm staying with the helmet and in fact increasing my protection with a Nolan modular. Same reason I always wear some kind of jacket. I'm just too accident prone to ride without protection. There are no right or wrong opinions. Having an opinion is just that. They are simply opinions. You have yours, I have mine. Makes the world go 'round. RainMaker

Hmmm. The deciding factor is feeling the wind in your hair. Disco can't understand the choice. Anyone else see the connection? (:
