I kinda got pissed Sunday when I was riding to a vintage bike show.I seen a rider coming up behind me on the frwy an was going to wave to him as he passed but did not even get a look or wave from him or his passenger just like I wasen't there.Very iritating.I thought about it for a while an was going to blast by him at triple digits but the traffic would not allow it an decided that he was not worth the bother or a big ticket.By the way he was riding a harley. What would you do?

Give him a friendly one finger wave, say something nice and friendly using four letter words and let it go.

Why do you think a stranger owes you anything?   ???

A wave is a simple courtesy acknowledgement, not a requirement...  I'm guessing About 60% of riders I wave to wave back.  The non wavers in my case are predominantly non-Harley riders, and very commonly Honda riders.  I don't worry about it.  I'm sure many times I'm riding I am enjoying the beautiful scenery and not watching other riders, and probably don't wave back.   angel

Just Sunday? That happens to me at least once a week, I'd say... And yeah, it's usually the owner's of a specific brand that do it... (And by do it, I mean totally ignore my presence, not just not wave back.)

Oh well... I usually just think how sorry I am for them, that they're so insecure that they can't even acknowledge another rider's existence, and get on with enjoying my ride...

Personally, I don't understand the waving. I usually try to wave back, if waved at. But, often, by the time I DO wave back, they are gone by, and I'm sure a lot of riders think I DIDN'T wave, or I'm "too good" to wave. It's just something I personally don't see any point in. I don't wave at pickup trucks, when I'm in mine, and I don't wave at Chevy's, because mine is a Chevy. I DO have a tendency to wave at pretty girls, though. I also don't see myself as a member of some "kindred brotherhood of free spirits" or anything like that. I ride bikes because I like to ride bikes. Period. Not to wave at every other bike rider. And I'm an equal opportunity non-waver - I don't wave at Honda's, Harleys, OR Suzuki's...

I guess I'd be upset if someone felt the need to "one finger salute" me, just because I didn't wave. Seems a little ridiculous, to me. So, if you see a red and black, tourer-looking Valk, and the helmeted rider doesn't wave, it might just be me. And I'm not "snubbing" you, or "insulting" you, or anything else. I'm just not waving.

I couldn't give a rat if someone waves or not.  I'm either riding to and from work or for personal enjoyment and many times just thinking about other things.  If someone wants to acknowledge me by waving great, I may wave back, I may not, it really depends on were my minds at.  I certainly don't purposely ignore folks but it happens.  Don't take it personally  tickedoff and you won't get all hot and bothered about it.  Cry

I don't wave at people when I pass them, or they pass me, if we are both going the same direction. I wave at bikes that are coming towards me, idk it is kinda of strange. The first time I started noticing the wave thing was a long time ago when I had a lifted jeep wrangler, it seemed back then that everyone else in a wrangler wanted to wave, like we were in a club or something. So I'd wave back. I do the same shyte with other bikes on the road. They wave, I wave back, if I feel like waving and they don't wave back f'em I'm still enjoying my ride.

Usually I'm the first one to wave no matter what they ride be it scooter, sport bike, cruiser or touring bike and I don't care about brands either.  If I'm passing them going the same way, I'll tap the horn.  I honk or wave at kids.  They eat it up.

I don't care one bit, about brands, either, or type of bike - although those that DO, bother me - I've had almost all brands and types at one time or another.  Undecided

I like the kids, too - they DO get a great big kick out of it. I can't honk, though, either passing or at the kids - the Stebel is loud, LOUD, LOUD!!!. I WILL, however, pull as close as I can, safely, with a "get-away" plan, right up next to the texter, and honk in their ear...makes their car stink...

"was going to wave to him as he passed but did not even get a look or wave from him or his passenger just like I wasen't there."

You didn't wave, so he didn't actually not return a wave. While passing or being passed I will wave if I can, but passing involves some concentration and control that may make waving difficult. I usually nod, and if they see it and nod back, that's enough. If not, I feel no need for revenge...

Back in the late '40's I waved at all the British bike riders and they always waved back.  There weren't too many of us then, riding BSA's, Matchlesses, AJS's, Nortons. Triumphs, etc.  We knew we could depend on help from each other.  Harley riders generally ignored us.  Riders of Indians did not.

When i rode the Valk with its three headlights,  it was funny. I would wave at Harley riders and they would start to wave and then kinda 'take it back'.

Now i wave at all, it they don't want to wave, no problem.  I ride to ride, not ride to wave. Grin

I would like to see the implementation of a five mile wave exclusion zone around rallys.

Also, it should be perfectly understandable for a Valkyrie rider to do a one-eighty, chase down other Valk riders and rewave if said Valkyrie rider misses a wave.

I am the same, I do not care what you ride I will wave at you, you are riding that's what matters, and the fact that many do not wave, well, I do not care I still wave. As much as the Harley ride will not wave to you ( which I rarely have an issue with, most wave) the sportsbike riders are the ones that have a dumbfounded look when I wave, they are the ones that many cruiser riders (no matter the brand) discriminate against, they always look stupid when they see me wave. In Europe no matter what you ride all wave, and there all believe its the BMW crowd that is stuck up as do people here about the Harley crowd. So my philosophy is simple if its riding wave, you get a wave back great if not maybe the guy was too busy with somethiung else. cooldude

We seriously need a waving icon

Wave if you want to wave, if they wave back than fine...if they don't fine...

You have a great life if this is what gets you miffed!

Enjoy the wind...I am sure you have plenty of friends out there...consider me one of them...

Relax and enjoy the wind.

I wave-most of the time. I ain't 100% by no means. My primary deal when riding though is RIDING. Other folks wave i try my darndest to return the kindness. It's not written in blood or stone anywhere. It is a matter of personal preference. Far as i'm concerned i'm out there to enjoy the wind and what ever else is thrown my way. I have no problem what so ever when other bikers are stopped somewhere and walking up and starting a conversation. Learned about some nice roads i hadn't been on before and shared my limited knowledge with them and oh yeah-we talked about each others rides-nicely. Wavin ain't mandantory-ridin is. RIDE SAFE.

who cares.....wave if it makes you feel good, like was said there are many reasons for a non response ranging from timing (you missed it) to they just hate you and ANYTHING inbetween, who cares.  FWIW I have found that different brands of riders (usually means a certain bike too) but not always responds to a different wave.  The high wave seems to get the lowest number of responses.......the low wave gets more response from the widest variety of riders YMMV.  Additionally I dont wave at riders that are acting rediculous.......rediculous here would mean:
-unsafe riding.......maybe passing in a curve or solid double yellow
-somone wearing very inadequate gear like shorts and flip flops on the freeway, no helmet no eye protection and a passenger wearing the same especially if its a child (the kids usually have a helmet though).
-or like yesterday.....a falling apart POS bike smoking things taped on, lopsided, no lights working not even a headlight...oil everywhere........the thing needed killing....I didnt wave, sorry dude, get a bike and maybe
A wave would be overly approving to an unsafe situation, I usually just glare

when i was younger i noticed that everyone waved to you when you drove down the country roads.  i mean everyone!!  now, i drive down those same roads, and no one waves anymore.  i don't think it's a "harley" thing, i think people are just unfriendly now a days.  i wouldn't take it personally (although, it probably is your fault for buying a forgein cycle and that's why the country is going to hell...  Cheesy)

This “Wave Thing” seems to come up about twice a year. . .   With all due respect; who cares? Both my wife and I wave. In fact, she’ll wave at a moped or scooter! (She has one and laughs that they’re ‘kindred’ spirits!) If you don’t want to wave, don’t, but man, don’t be a jerk about it here. . .  I can’t believe some of the comments. Wow! If you ‘do’ wave it doesn’t mean you’re asking another dude out to dinner.

I know I’m not the oldest here – by a long shot - but doesn’t anyone else remember riding back “in the day?”  I’m only 53 and started ‘serious’ street riding around 1970 (Not counting running the local neighborhood roads on my mini bike in the 60’s) Anyway, my first “road bike” (kind of) was a Yamaha 360. I’d ride all over the county roads and a few two lane highways.  . . and hardly EVER saw another bike (not counting the ones I was riding with!) Doesn’t anybody else remember that? You just never saw other bikes! Was it a geographic thing? Maybe my County/State didn’t have the same numbers of a warmer State? I don’t know, but seeing other bikes was truly rare!

I know there are some ‘senior’ riders here who started in the 40’s and 50’s for peat sake! I’m curious about their views. By the time I started riding my brothers CB 750 and doing some serious cursing, it wasn’t much different. So, we WAVED when we saw another bike . . .  It was unusual seeing one and we were just acknowledging each other. “Tipping out hats” as it were. . . It’s that simple!  Heck! Even when my bride and I got our Fat Lady in 2000 we weren’t seeing the number of bikes we see NOW!

We still wave. . . .  even at Harleys and Mopeds, BUT THOSE STINKING CROTCH ROCKETS CAN BURN IN HELL!

I feel almost the same as Walkure. I try to wave to they that wave but i'm into the ride....
Life is to short to take it personal, as I get older (55), to wave or not to wave means very little to me
I don't wave at cars and trucks and I'm getting to old to wave at girls Undecided so all I can say is lets just all enjoy the Ride.

If you wave I will try my best to wave back, but like I said I'ts all about enjoying the Ride for me.

I wave. Kit waves. No biggie. If they dont wave I might say 'dick' loudly to ourselves but its only to humor us and not to disrespect. My HD bud doesnt wave at anyone, even me. Depends on the person, not the bike.

I stop waving about a 100 miles outta Sturgis. Gets old after a thousand bikes or so. Unless I'm passing about 50 of them on SD 44. Then its Kits legs up on my lap, lean back, and gently wave.  crazy2

Chris, I'm not sure. Those guys on them ratted out bikes (those that ride'm) get alot of respect outta me and definitly a wave. Talked to a old grey beard in Winner Sd last year. He had a old knuckle he was on. Rode it from the east coast on his way to Sturgis. He had to leave it run as he fueled cause it wouldnt start if he shut it off. I could count the oil drips as it sat.

I will wave to anyone, but this year I've noticed more and more non-wavers out there. It used to bother me too, when I wouldn't receive a wave back, So I have started to wait on my wave until the other's waves first that way I won't be bothered by non-wavers. I will admit I forget once and awhile and still wave first. Anyway Happy Waving! cooldude

I'm with you Fudgie! I used to ride a '63 Pan Head HD. If I shut if off, it woul'nt start for at least a half hour, so... it ran when fueling. It's a miracle it didn't burn to the ground!  crazy2 It definatley used to mark it's territory. What do you expect when there is a drip oiler on the rear chain where it goes though the primary case? Neat part was though that I never worried about the rear wheel rusting. Now, traction may have been another problem! uglystupid2

Also, I do get to Laconia and Daytona fairly frequently, and don't wave to anyone when the place is full of bikes.  Smiley

I hear ya fudgie, but this wasnt a "rat bike" per se.....this was deffinetly ratty though it was a older yamaha 2 clinder that had been in a wreck obviously and home repaired the redneck way.  The rider was no where near an old "grey beard" he was a young punk out making noise and I was wishing a cop was near by.  I will say however that dude was brave to ride that thing as fast as he was pushing it at dusk with no lights and banding wire holding major components on.....or was that stupidity........

Well in the first place just throw your hand up if you want to wave and don't if you don't.

Harley smarley, ain't got a thing to do with it.

If you want friends show yourself friendly or you may just go around offended all the time.

His ole lady might have been wragging on him or on the wrag.

WHo knows, sometimes it's the passengers job to do the waving and sometimes they my be rookies.

Forget to wave.

Anyway when in the same lane or adjacent lanes you don't always get a wave.

Going in the same direction anyway.

The lack of waving just means that more people are paying attention to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) instructors. You're supposed to keep both hands on the handlebars. They're just being safe riders. cooldude

Sounds like you need to chill and discover the REAL reason to ride!

No, Tell me that You didn't say that.  Lips Sealed

You do realize that you will have to EAT those words someday?  Evil

Our group carries large D cell flashlights. If someone doesn't wave we run them down and get the flashlight in their eyes and interrogate them as to why they didn't wave. If they have a lame answer we pummel them with the flashlights until we have an acceptable answer.

No wait, that's texting drivers. We don't care if someone doesn't wave.

It's amazing how people get bent out of shape over whether some other rider waves or not.  I personnaly have started a new tradition.  I fart.  When I see another ride I just lift a cheeck and let it flow.  Now he doesn't know that I am acknowledging him with the orderous gas.  But I have at least acknowledge him as a ride.

So, to all that pass by me, if you see me on one cheeck and you smell a brief foul smell, or hear the flapping sound of my cheecks then I have acknowledged you as a rider.
