First, thanks for all your posts as this was the first time I had the rear apart. This forum and wealth of information is just amazing. Had trouble getting the wheel off till I checked hear and saw I needed to wiggle the wheel & remove the wheel & drive together. I did try to pry a few times but finally wiggled off. I replaced all 3 o-rings, splines were in great shape, removed driveshaft & pumpkin, lubed u-joint end with Moly and pinion end of driveshaft with Belray water proof grease. Cleaned splines and coated with Moly. Put it all together & rode a few miles on the new tires. Got home and saw diff oil spray and it is leaking diff oil out the bottom cutout in the plastic ring. Do I need to replace some type of seal? When it was apart, all looked fine? Bike only has 12,800 miles..... Suggestions?

Thanks,

Henry

Certainly sounds like the big seal...but it's really unusual to tear that up changing a wheel...

Are you certain you got the pinion seal into the pinion cup (on the driveshaft), it can leak oil and run/leak out the bottom of the swingarm/rear end point, and then run down to the bottom of the rear end...

Did you change the oil in the final drive?  How much did you put in it.  It takes 150cc is all

Or filled with the bike standing straight up if your doing it by the "fill to the bottom of the fill plug hole" method.

Thanks guys, first, I did not touch the diff fluid as that service was about 500 miles ago, never had any leaks. I did put Belray w/p grease in the pinion cup and on the pinion end of the driveshaft and it was inserted into the cup before I slid the assembly back into the swingarm.  The seal was into the cup. I did have to turn the pumpkin with the drive so I could engage the ujoint. I left the pinion nuts last, installed the orings, all 3 and torqued the axle, caliper, then did the 4 pumpkin nuts. I just rode it again for 5 miles, I park on the stand and it is just dripping out the weep hole?

Just tore it back apart, looks like I must have hit the diff seal with the screwdriver when I was trying to pry the drive loose. My bad. Anyone have a clue to replacing this seal. looks like I have to pull the diff apart? Any help, I am mechanicly inclined but never done this before. Special tools?

Just the seal!

Use a couple of sheet metal screws to pull out the old seal and replace it with a new seal.

Pretty simple actually!

can it really be that simple, just screw in some small screws just a tad and then pull on them to remove the seal. I guess I could drive the new one in using  a small can maybe?

A dealer actually told me I'd have to tear the final drive apart to replace the big seal.  Good thing I didn't believe him!  Removal is easy -- I just used a screwdriver to pop the old one out.  I thought I'd need a fancy tool to drive the new one in, but I just lubed it and gently seated it with my thumbs.  A very simple job!

Thanks to all for the suggestions & remedy. It was the pinion seal & the screw to remove the seal worked great. Also followed the suggestion to lube & press in by hand. So far all is well. Learned my lesson.

Thanks
