My "new" Valk  Grin has some scuffs on the engine guards and I would like to replace them.  I stumbled across these and figured they would provide some more protection and peg mounting options for about the same price as replacing both sides with OEM guards.

http://www.biker-discount.co.uk/valkyrie-f6c-heavy-duty-crash-bars-chrome-132-p.asp

Does anybody have any experience with these?  Are they as thick/strong?  They would make it look a bit bigger from the front, but I think I like the way they look.

They come out to $266.49 with shipping.  Looks like brand new crash bars will be about $220 before shipping, so I need to decide if I like the look.  You're definitely right about the old Goldwing look.

I think you're a little high on the OEM crash bar cost. Service Honda in Indiana has them listed at $144 brand new for both sides. A couple years ago I only paid something like $154 for new bars for an I/S.

I can see one plus to those.  You can ride with shorts and flip flops like I see alot of v-twin riders do and not burn your ankles.

I haven't called around, but most of the OEM sites where you can order off the schematics have both sides going for about $190.  The lowest I've found is $109/$80, depending on which side you want.

The more I look at those, the less I like them.

BF, riding in shorts and flip-flops would fix those awkward "you wear chaps?!  Are they a$$-less chaps?!" conversations.

I wonder if they would fit around the Interstates radiator pods?

I saw them years ago and never thought much about them since I did not need them or could afford any changes back then. I can't remember where I saw them but I did see the loops over the sides of each head (the big "U" shape) somewhere that you had to drill a hole through the loop around the head on each side of engine then they just bolted throught that hole I figured that would weaken the original crash bars too much as to make them less protective in a real tip over or crash.

P.S. I kinda like them just my opinion and most everyone knows I am sort of special in that area. uglystupid2 crazy2

Fordmano, just what would you mount the pods to? I like them too (I had a 1980 GL1100 that I loved, so the look is OK by me). All the hiway peg and lighting mount options, plus the ability to make a vinyl or leather wind guard to wrap around them. But no possibility of hanging the I/S pods that I can see.
Now, if they made a rear crashbar/bag protector like that, I'd be all over it.

What I meant was I wonder if these would mount in a way that would encase or wrap around the Pods.

I have no idea how they would mount but I guess if you tied to the frame up near the frame kneck it might be do-able.

The small "U" shaped loop if that is what you were asking on the ones I looked at years ago had a bung welded into the end of the open tubes and you drilled 2 holes in your existing crash bar the outer edge that wraps around the timing cover..

I am a terrible artist but I will try and draw what I am trying to explain. I am at work so it might take me some time to get it drawn and then uploaded and report back. You may want to check back in the morning to see if I was able to get it drawn.

I pretty sure Big Mike had them at his website, Valkyrie Bling and More, but I just looked and they're not listed anymore.

Maybe that is where I saw them? Can't remember for sure, seems lilke they were very expensive for what it was and how they mounted... I need to find a local chromer that is worth a hoot and maybe come up with something that will atually work on an I/S and make the crash protection better...

They do look like the wing ones but I thought the ones for the wings were one piece and what I Am thinking what I saw was an add-on bar.

But I am probably wrong like I am a lot of the time.

They dont look too bad, but if you really examine how they are mounted (to the same mounting bolts as the OEM), the high part would seem to fold very easily in a crash since its not supported by much, that would drive the valve cover portion into the engine.  I dont think its as protective as it looks

I was thinking the same thing about the top side be rather weak.  They don't seem like they would do much, even in the event of just dropping the bike.

The Goldwing (89ish) had a third point attaching to the frame rearward of the first two, this gave you three points of contact and you couldn't develop a pivot point about the two front mounting points.

The stock Valkyrie crash bars are excellent protection for the bike and the cylinder heads.

They are engineered perfectly and in combination with the rear crash bars on my Interstate will prevent any other parts on the bike coming into contact with the pavement if the bike goes down on it's side.

You just can't get any better than that!

Looking at it again, there is no attachment to the upper crashbar mount for the stock bars. You could cut the upper part of the stock bars after the pod attachment tabs and keep the pods mounted that way. In fact, a clever chap could extend that piece to somehow attach to these new bars, making them quite a bit stronger...

Looking at the top; swept out like that they may contact the faring (or windshield on a Tourer) in a tight turn, lessening your turning radius and possibly causing damage there as well. Probably why they describe them for F6c.
Just thinking out loud,
Fred.

The Valkyrie is more commonly known in Europe as F6C.  That's why the English company used that.

I remember something similar too... maybe he just had some of the old gold wing bars
with the valve-cover wrap around... ?
