Never had a problem until now.

When I press the starter button the headlight just goes dim and nothing happens.
The battery reads 11.76 volts
I ran jumper cables from the car ( car not running) and still no difference.
I can't find any info on servicing the starter button for an interstate. Any help would be much appreciated.

Your battery is probably shot.

It should be reading 12.7 volts!

Just because you jumped the battery and nothing happened really is not indicative of anything except maybe a bad jump job.

The headlight is supposed to go out when you press the starter button. You say it dimmed? Makes no sense. More than likely it did go out!

If you disconnect your battery before jumping you may have better results but don't run the bike when you take off the jump cable.

+1 other posts.
If your battery dropped a cell which means it is completely shorted out a jump form a car battery will not overcome the short, with car running it might, depends how bad the dropped cell is.

Make sure this isn't a hydro-lock situation - pull #6 plug, take it outside of the garage and try to start.  If it squirts gas, then you just saved an expensive repair job.

I went out and purchased a new battery and it still won't turnover. Yes, the headlight goes out when the starter button is depressed.

I hooked it up to my car battery without the motorcycle battery connected and still the same issue.

Did you perform the start button maintenance tank_post linked to?  If not, do that then get back to us.  It's a pretty common thing.

It is working again. Shocked I think my compressor for the air horn (which is forward of the battery box) must have shorted against something. I have secured it with zap straps and now everything is working. Shocked

A detailed procedure for servicing the starter button on an Interstate would be helpful. It isn't the same setup on an Interstate as the other models.

my i/s has 143.000 miles on it..i have yet to tear the starter button apart..i've done several on standards and tourers. i/s has relays in the headlight circut..so you don't have the heavy load going threw it like the other models. unless it's getting finicky..i would'nt worry with it.
BTW..this is 3W-lonerider..i'm on the wifes puter.

Giggles, I agree  with you I believe  that because of the relays in the I/S wiring  the starter button doesn't get the abuse that the standard, and tourers are subject to.
