OK - I need to adjust the "shims" on the Cobra needles in my carbs.  What will I find when I remove the black vacuum covers?

How does this sound:

remove the black caps
remove the springs - anythings special about this step?
remove the diaphram - any tips on this step?
then what?

needle removal, shim adjustment?

If anyone have any hints on removing any of this things - all the help is appreciated.

TIA

Chet Walters from Rattlebars has a nice step-by-step write up - complete with pictures.

Carb update -

1.  two weeks ago the mileage went south (low 20's)
2.  Pulled the plugs, 1-2-3 not to bad, 4-5-6 black and sooty.
3.  Installed new plugs, mileage went up to 28-29--still not back to the old "normal" of 33-34.
4.  Printed a copy of "chets" carb shim (thanks for the link).  Read it over and a few other sites for info and steps.
5.  today I got into each carb and moved the "clip" from #3 setting to #2 setting (I have been told this is the stock setting).  Not a bad job.  The first carb took me 20 minutes, the other five took about 5-7 minutes apiece.
6.  Tightened all 18 of the clamps fromt the air box down to the block.

Mileage check with just new plugs went up to 28-29 MPG.
Mileage check with new plugs and the carb adjustment went up to 37 MPG.  Will have to verify this with a few more rides.

Just ordered a "stubby Pilot tool" from Red Eye.  Will adjust the air mix to 2 1/4 when it comes in.

Al least I'm on the right track.
