I know this isn’t about a Valk. I’m rebuilding the front forks on a 2002 1800 Goldwing for a friend of mine. He has the Honda Shop Manual. My question is how much oil do the forks hold. In the Honda shop manual it says 8 oz. per side. When I went to Honda to get the new seal and other parts plus oil. Boy was there sticker shock, 22 dollars a quart. The Guy in back said I needed 17 oz. per stick. That’s what it said in his book. My book said 8oz per stick. Which one is right?

Well, the 17oz per stick is way more right for the dealer, he bout doubles his money. |

I just rebuilt my '05 1800's forks last week. The new fork springs I bought came with a liter of 10W fork oil. Both forks took exactly 1 liter. Each side was slightly different but after you get the right amount in, you should be 5 inches down from the top of the fork tube. Left side is 17.9 oz. Right side is 16.4 oz.

If it takes 16.5-7 oz per stick why does it say 8oz in the regular Honda Shop for a 2002 1800 Goldwing Manual he bought when he bought his bike? I know in my Valk it only takes 8oz. Least that what it says in my shop manual.

I know in my Valk it only takes 8oz. Least that what it says in my shop manual.
That's not correct. The Valk takes nearly a quart... |

I just checked my shop manual and Valkyries take the following: Left Right Standard/Tourer 25.2 oz 22.7 oz Interstate 24.8 oz 22.6 oz Marty |

Make sure you pump the right side dampering rod after you put fluid before you measure to make sure you have all the air out of the dampering rod

To help clarify that measurement on the GW, since it would make a huge difference. What's the tube status of the 5" from the top? 1.) Fully compressed on the table. 2.) Fully extended 3.) All components installed & mounted, both wheels on the ground...bike lift or center-stand. |

The springs are not installed yet and the tubes are compressed all the way. After pumping the dampener rod to fill it, then measure 5" down. The left side needs no pumping. After measuring, then install the springs, spacers and top caps. |
