Hello,

I bought I/S saddlebags but without keys.  Should any locksmith be able to re-key the lock for my '03 Standard key?  I called 3 places and they seemed hesitant about being able to do it.  Is there something special about these locks?

Also, what should I expect to pay?

 Thanks,

Any locksmith should be able to make a key for them.

However, since Honda made two different keyways for the Valk, you may not be able to get everything (ignition, fork lock, seat lock, gas tank) on same key.  See if your present key will slide into the lock.  If it does (even tho it won't turn), the bag locks can be rekeyed to match the rest of your bike.

If not, you may have to provide them with the correct key blank.  (Available from a dealer or Ebay)

Price?  Could be anywhere from $15.00 to $30.00 depending on their attitude and ability.

They should only have to "1st key" one bag.   If these came off the same bike they will be keyed alike.

Another solution would be to buy an entire lockset from a Tourer or Interstate from Pinwall and replace all yours.

Thanks for the info.  I should have mentioned that my key does fit into the locks.  The bags came of the same bike; Seller converted to a trike.

Two locksmiths I called didn't think he had the "pins".  I'm going to remove them from the bags and take them in.  At least I know it's possible and what I should expect to pay.

Thanks,

Yes you can get the locks fixed to work with your key....Cost me $48.00 from a local locksmith took him about 15 minutes...Rode the bike to his shop and told him what I needed he said " No problem " .... These are Interstate saddlebags on a Standard.

Sorry for the O/T but, Joe, those side covers underneath the saddle are pretty nifty. Are they handmade or can those be bought from somewhere? They definitely make a nice flowing line from the tank back and below.

I Keyed my bike myself. Just takes some time. The bags wasn't as hard as the helmet locks. Took me about 30 minutes each and i was able to clean and lubricate them.

Did you do a write-up, or post, on it?

If I remember right its a c-clip that holds the lock inplace.  I'll need to go look.

There is a c-clip that holds the latch arm in place, once the c-clip and the latch arm is removed the barrel should slide out the front.  But you have to be careful.  Put a key in the lock before you try this as when you pull it out there is 5 tumblers and 5 very small springs that will fall or spring out.  The key keeps them locked in place.  You can run a piece of tape around the barrel holding the tumblers and springs in place before you remove the key from the barrel.  The bags can still be used, just not locked.  The bags and the trunk are the easiest to modify once removed.  The helmet locks on the back of the bike are a real pain.  they were installed with a torque sensitive bolt that breaks the head off once a specific torque is met, but a pair of vicegrips on the remaining head of teh stud will remove the screw and the locks will fall off.   I think someone is going to send me a set of locks and I'll do a detailed writeup for the board.  For those that like to tinker with small parts I would rate this one a 2 out of 5, 5 being hard.

Remember if you are changing all your locks, that steering lock needs the tree removed to get it out.

I don't know if you can remove the tumbler from that one.

I removed the full assembly from the bag.  I don't see any C-clips.  Do I need to drill out the rivets and remove the latch housing?

This is what I'm looking at:

lift up on the lever that will expose the back of the cylinder (part the key goes in)  you will see the c-clip on the end of the cylinder...  Your picture is looking at it from the top, look at it from teh bottom and open up lever like your opening your bag...

Ok, I see it now.  The spring tension was tight and I didn't know that part moved.  I pulled back on the mounting screws and I see the C-clip.   Thanks!

don't forget to put that key in before you pull it out of the cylinder... parts will fall out. If you want to call me I can walk you through the process of re-keying yourself... 614-two zero three-61 nine six

The ideal is when the key is in all the pins line up and are flush with the top and the bottom of the pins are flush with the bottom. With the key in look and see how many pins are this way. Any pins that are not switch them around til they are.  I have extra pins so I do a lot os swapping. Once you are done, keep the pins that are flush. Remove the pins and springs that are not. This is a quick fix. For the long version you need to custom fit the pins that are not flush...ie, file down until flush or remove material in the center to allow to travel more, that's the long way.  I do a little of both.

I took both latches to a locksmith this afternoon. 10 minutes, and $12 dollars later I had latches that were keyed to my ignition key. I also had him make me a spare key. ( I never had an extra key. I hope I didn't jinx myself )
