Neighbor has a new to him 2000 Valk with extended fuel tank and sometimes it will just shut off. After it shuts off when you first try to restart it want start let it sit of a couple of minutes and it fires right off. Dont know if the fuel pump is still running when it shuts off but will check next time it does it. Anyone have any ideas bike has a new battery

Are you talking about a belly tank when you say extended?

If not, the Valkrie does NOT have a fuel pump.

Sounds like you are loosing vacuum.

Replace some hoses under there especially if they are very old.

They rot and crack real easy.

I was also thinking the vent tube on the tank. Crack the tank cap open and see if it goes away (spare key).

If I have it right, the tank gravity feeds the belly tank, and there is an electric pump to feed from the belly tank to the carbs.

Did the bike sit up before he bought it?  How clean is the tank and fuel?  Could be a clogged screen on top of the petcock.

Mine did the same exact thing after putting on the belly tank. I don't know how long that tank has been installed, or when the last time anybody messed with the fuel lines. Check and make sure the feed line from the fuel pump to the carbs is not kinked somewhere.

Mine pressed up under the tank and pinched to a 90° bend. Would make it about a quarter mile and then it would feel like it ran out of fuel. Sit for a few minutes and it would run briefly and shut down again.

Good luck.

Almost forgot,

You can hear the fuel pump "clicking" when it is running. It isn't too loud, but with the key on and the engine not running you can hear it clicking.

This bike may run 200 to 300 miles before it shuts off. Sunday it shut off twice in 100 miles other than that it ran flawless.

I don't have a belly tank but what you describe sounds like a bad hot wire or ground connection to the fuel pump.
