I have a couple of friends that rode to Orlando, Florida last weekend. They took 3 days to get there riding the scenic coastline route. They left Orlando, FL. this past Monday coming back to DFW. They were attempting an Iron Butt Ride. One was on a Honda VTX 1300 and the other was on a Yamaha Roadstar. Well, I received a call on Monday that the VTX battery died somewhere in Mississippi and they bought a battery at a WalMart some 10 miles down the road. O.K., so they are back on the road. I received another call a couple of hours later and they also sent me a picture of the Yamaha Roadstar's rear tire. Here is the photo that they sent me.

Needless to say that they did not make the Iron Butt ride in the alloted time. My friend was lucky that he didn't have a blowout at highway speed.

I would have to say that having a tubed tire saved his hiney.  I hvae run my Valk rear tire down to cords a couple of times but have always caught it before it went POP!!!  I try to check my tires much more often now and replace when they are questionable.

Wow.

It looks like it lost some chunks, not just normal wear.  I'd like to see more of that tire.

One thing comes to mind! What about preparation or lack thereoff.  Shocked  When your tired you don't want to worry about your equipment, at least I don't!

Wow.

....  I'd like to see more of that tire.

I'd bet he would, too!  Grin

Let's see - I'm going on a 2,000 mile or better road trip.  Maybe I should check the tires, oil, coolant and yeah, that battery has been really struggling lately......  NAH!!!  LET'S RIDE!!!!!!

Hey Mark (RainMaker), I wouldn't comment. You are guessing and don't know the facts on their preparation for that trip. Some batteries give you notice if they are going to fail and others don't. That tire is being looked at to see if it was defective. Sometimes things just happen, such as u-joints going out and wheels bearings going bad. I hope you never have to experience any problems on any of your travels.

Gotta disagree here. I have seen a tubeless tire that wore a hole on it at highway speeds. Sounded like a loud squirt gun spitting out air until he got pulled over. I've also seen a tube type that wore a hole in the tire-the thing blew instantly and dramatically. The tube is not showing in that picture, it is an inner layer of the tire.

I've got to agree that even with preparation, the unexpected can always bite you.  I went over my bike stem-to-stern before the Deadwood trip last summer, including checking the petcock and replacing the kickstand bolt and spring, and one left me stranded and the other broke in spite of being new.  Fortunately we were carrying spares of both.

My experience with tires is that they seem to wear faster the more worn they get.  At the beginning of a long trip it may appear that the tread is sufficient; not so much near the end.

Sorry I am not politically correct.

Spending 4 weeks preping my bike for Inzane. Replaced the rear tire even as last one not near the wear bars. Rear maintenance at 4k miles. Never had a breakdown and hope to never have one. I think that my preparation has something to do with that.

I'll work on my sensitivity. Sorry to all I offended.
