I was a big fan also. He was a great person off the set too, from what I understand. RIP James.

I think I was in the 5th or 6th grade when that show came on.....wasn't allowed to watch it because I had to go to bed before it came on....so I could only listen to it for the first few years....how old was he? He out lived all of the orginal cast members I believe, read somewhere he was fond the booze...thats what preserved him maybe R.I.P

We still watch GunSmoke in our house hold every week day evening with supper... Right HB... He was only 88.. Gee I thought he was older... 6'.6" - 6'.7" He sure was a tall drink of water...
Most don't know that his given name was: James King Aurness
Mini Biography ~~ American leading man famed as the star of one of the longest-running shows in U.S. television history, "Gunsmoke" (1955). Born of Norwegian heritage (the family name, Aurness, had formerly been Aursness) in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Rolf and Ruth Duesler Aurness. His father was a traveling salesman of medical supplies and his mother later became a newspaper columnist. He entered the army and trained at Camp Wheeler, Georgia, before shipping out for North Africa. After landing at Casablanca, Arness joined the 3rd Infantry Division in time for the invasion of Anzio. Ten days after the invasion, Arness was severely wounded in the leg and foot by German machine-gun fire. His wounds, which plagued him the rest of his life, resulted in his medical discharge from the army. While recuperating in a Clinton, Iowa hospital, he was visited by his younger brother Peter (later to gain fame as actor Peter Graves)
A lot of people have no idea that Peter Graves was his younger brother ,And was very influential in GunSmoke... If you listen you can hear Peter announced the Show ... And produced or director.. Can't remember..
RIP James...

Awwww...crap! Another icon gone...well I hope he lived a long and happy life. I loved that show! And I think I had a bit of a crush on "the marshall." Always was a rush from the dinner table when one of my brothers would yell "Gunsmoke is on!" ...and Mom would have a heckuva time getting us to help with the dishes. I kinda miss the days when we could religiously follow our favorite TV shows for years....*wistful sigh*...now they cancel them on a whim or at the slightest sign of declining viewership. Sometime in the 80's? ...I watched "Big Jim McClain"...an anti-communist movie made in the McCarthy era...I think it may have been the only movie in which Peter Graves and James Arness co-starred...along with John Wayne. Wow...was that a different era!

In my dads later years and after he retired he purchased the western channel from his cable company. It didn't what time of day or night if we went to visit him you were gonna watch gunsmoke, maverick, big valley the rifleman or any other western that was on. Those were some good years and good visits. R.I.P. Matt.
