RIDIN THE DRAGON'S TAIL IN NOVEMBER!

GREETINGS! I'm sorry to take up space here on a subject that has been addressed but I still need help. I want t put a tail light on my 2000 IS. I bought a tail light assembly on ebay, before I knew what I was doing ... I see Mr. Honda made my fender with a cutout and a plastic cover, which means to me that there MUST be a stock assembly for that spot. Apparently NOT. I now discover that the assembly I bought is for a Standard/Tourer and won't bolt up. So I go to this wonderful VRCC site and look around. I see adding fender tail lights all over the place! But not HOW to do it. I have the assembly, the perimeter gasket and the wiring harness with two multi-plug ends. How do I get it to work? Am I missing a part(s)? My friends say I am missing something but not in motorcycle parts...........! How do I keep all the road crud out of the housing as it is open in the back? A grommet for the wiring? Should I sell what I have and buy a different housing? I have a picture of the unit I bought but can't figure out how to post it here. Thank you. Any help is always appreciated. Be safe. Peace.

What are you talking about? I installed a Standard/Tourer taillight on my 2K I/S last night. That plastic cover hides the taillight mounting area. It'll be easier if you remove the rear wheel. Take an 8mm socket and undo the screws holding the plastic cover in place. Pull the plastic cover off from the outside of the fender and remove the tape covering the wiring harness hole. Then try to fit the taillight into place. You may or may not have to trim the two pieces of the trunk support framework hanging down. After you have it in place, put some antiseize on the screws and install them.
Now that you've got it mounted, wire it up and you are done!!

Marty!Really? I removed the plastic cover. There are only two round holes for bolts in the cut out area. they are at the top of the cut out and angled almost horizontally, front to back. The two bolts at the top of the housing are not aligned with those holes and are way too short to fit anyway. The only other hole is a square one at the bottom of the cut out for the bottom of the plastic cover to latch in to.....? Am I missing an extra bracket or something. There is absolutely no way for this housing to bolt to the existing holes.....tell me how to post pics and I will post one of the fender and one of the housing, if you think that will help explain what I have.....Thanks for the info......I'm more encouraged now than I was a while ago anyway..!

Are you sure you have a Valk Standard taillight? Honda made taillights for several models of the 750 and 1100 Shadows that look like ours but won't fit. Marty

The housing was listed as a Standard/Tourer. It looks like the correct one. I also have a 750 Shadow Aero and that tail light doesn't look like this one.

The rear fender section of the Interstate, Tourer and Standard are all the same (check the part #s). I chopped the original fender on my Standard and decided I didn't like it. I bought a used Interstate fender on ebay. It came with the plastic cover. I removed the cover and installed the stock tail light. It bolted right up. IMHO if yours doesn't, you don't have a Valk tail light.
There is also a rubber "gasket" the fits between the tail light and the fender and protrudes through the square hole at the bottom of the mounting area.

That doesn't look right. The wiring looks wrong and a Valk rubber "gasket" should completely cover the base of the taillight.
It looks to me like something similar to but not a Valkyrie taillight.

With the rubber gasket: .jpg) Without the rubber gasket: .jpg) You do NOT have a Valkyrie taillight. The tab at the bottom of the taillight fits into the hole in the fender. Marty P.S. You owe me a few fermented grain beverages for this.

OMG!! I'm not even close!! I O U a biiig cold one for your trouble Marty! NOTE TO ALL : This fellow rider MARTY, previously unknown to me, took the time to remove his tail light, take a picture and POST IT here to help me out! He is correct, I DO NOT have an interstate tail light! The one I bought on eBay said it was off a standard/tourer. It might or might not be. I'll try and see if I can find out and try to resell it myself to recover my loss. I didn't think there was a tail light available for the IS and that others were using a S/T and adapting it. Any one need a tail light assembly......? THANKS TO YOU ALL FOR YOUR GUIDANCE AND TIME. MARTY, NEXT ONE'S ON ME..............Dave

Dave, the pics I posted were of the Standard/Tourer taillight I installed last night. I'm looking through all the models I know of on hdl parts to see if I can figure out what taillight you have. Do me a favor and see if you can see a part #.

So far your taillight looks like it could be from an VT1100C3 Aero, VT1100C2 Sabre, VT750C Spirit or VT750CD ACE. Basically all the VT Shadows that use that style taillight have that same 3 bolt bracket. Talk to who you got the light from and see if they'll take it back. If not, put it on one of the Shadow boards or ebay.

I could be wrong, but that sure looks like a Sabre tailight.
It shore ain't one for a Std/Tourer.

LOL Maybe 2 months ago I noticed a tail light that was advertised on ebay, as a Valkyrie. I noticed it was not, emailed the seller (might have been pinwal) and mentioned this to them. Whoever it was, emailed me back, thanking me. Clarified that the brake light was removed from a Valkyrie, and that most likely the PO had "made" this brake light fit his Valk. At the time, I thought it was a Shadow model that it was taken from.

It is possible to make that one fit. All I could find when I was looking was one from a Shadow and after modding up some brackets it went on fine. The proper gasket that I bought seperately wouldn't fit though so I made up one of those too. 6000ks and numerous wet rides later all is still good with the light.
