OK, I don't know if anyone would know this, but is the side covers that were offered by Hondaline chrome plated or vacuum metalized? It seems to me if the sell prices was below $100 from the OEM they would have to be vacuum metalized. Does anyone have a set and if they do what is the quality of the chrome?

Fairly certain that you can not plate (chrome) plastic.

I think Big Mike bought up some side covers and chrome plated them... maybe he can specify what the exact process really is... -Mike

ABS and PCS+ABS can be chrome plated with no problem. It takes a specific grade of ABS to plate. I've been chrome plating plastic parts and vacuum metalizing them for over 30 years. Stated the the '87 Lincoln making some vacuum metalized chrome parts. I'm really interested in which method Honda used. triple chrome plating is about $300 for the side covers, but vacuum metalization is only about $100 for the covers.

I am surprised that the plastic would conduct enough electricty for plating.

In VM plating, no electroplating is used. The host metal is vaporized in a vacuum and it deposits on the plastic in a very thin layer. If you VM plate plastic with copper, you then have a conducting surface to plate with nickel, and finally chrome, for traditional triple chrome plating.

Your spot on bobbo, the vm is not as good as triple plating. It can peel easy if not prep'd right. But after talking to Mike I think I'm going to have mine done. Place in california.
