Back again
Thanks again for the help with the leaking fuel petcock. The rebuild is easy enough, just pay close attention to how its put together, the kit i got from my dealer had no instructions, or assembly diagrams.
My Valk is a 98 with 50k, I seam to have a popping/backfiring sound that you would hear when your in 3th gear, wind up to 5k and back off.

So what mite this be ????

        Thanks  vrcc 2838

Has it been de-smogged?Start with a close inspection of your  vacuum hoses.

Re-torque the header nuts and use care to not break them off.

Tightening the carb clamps will help some also. Go REAL EASY on the exhaust header bolts. Don't take a whole lot to break them. Hope all this helps. RIDE SAFE.

popping is most commonly caused by vacuum leaks which typically are found in the vacuum lines or the nipples covering the unused ports.  Tightening the intake clamps (18 screws) and the header nuts are also helpful.  Another thing that causes popping is having a timing belt one tooth off.  If tightening up the air systems doesnt stop it...its easy enough to pull the timing belt cover and see if all three marks line up across the front.

In addition to air leakage, running lean can also cause a deceleration backfire.  If this did not happen before your petcock rebuild and now happens after, you may have dislodged a vacuum line removing and reinstalling the tank or perhaps the new petcock rebuild is starving the bike of fuel.   Vacuum line would be the easiest fix.

Had some popping on a tourer that I just repaired for hyrdolock.  We could not get all of the liquid gas from the right side exhaust out (they hyrolock put about a quart of qas in there), and it popped for a little while until the gas vaporized and was removed.  Now it is all better and no popping.
