We should have a member near there that could fingerprint the bike. I think that is the best way to verify it.

fishy, he's either lazy or dishonest

last time I needed a title...
If it is legit it is easy to get the title replaced. If it is out of different states and you are are trying to get it straightened out, you're counting on people helping with nothing to gain. He/you can call sheriff with serial # and get the paper work to get a title, if clean. An honest salvage yard won't take it without title or Sheriff's memo.

What he said. You CANNOT sell a bike without a title in Texas...there IS one in some form that can be recovered by a trip to the county courthouse, OR it's NOT legit.

My guess would be an ex-spouse who managed to gain possession of the bike but not the title.  Whether it actually belongs to her would be an open question.  There could be other reasons that someone may have disappeared and left his property behind.  Again ownership is an open question.  Apparently the seller is not convinced the he or she legally owns it, but for some reason believes that it is hers or his for disposal purposes.

$5500 is a bit high for your run-of-the-mill scam.

no money in parting out when you start with 5500 in it.
takes a lot of time and a lot of work, then it takes time to get the pieces sold and shipped.
I realize what the parts have been selling for sounds like a good return but you'd have to sell a lot of stuff just to get your 5500 back and wait patiently for the profit to trickle in.
Shipping the parts is very time consuming to add to the labor time to take it apart.
I bet Pinwall would not pay half that and they have a fair sized staff to do the dismantling, ebay listing, and shipping. Plus they do several different brands of bikes.
