If I had just stopped my whinning and dug into it , I would have seen that the repair was no big deal.

The seal that came out of there was totaled.  I can't imagine what would have caused so much damage.  I'll add some pictures later so some of you guru's can diagnose what happened here.  Must have been something the previous owner did.....well, I'll not jump to conclusions untill someone else looks at the old seal.

I compiled a ton of fork information before I started this venture (that's just how I roll).  The most helpful instructions are the 4 part youtube post on fork seals on a VTX1800.  Everything there is helpfull, except the dude gets confused on what is left and right  sometimes.  O well, that aside, it's a great video guide.

I borrowed a left fork tool, which I didn't need.  I'll use it for a pattern to make me one, incase I decide to go to progressive springs, someday.

except the dude gets confused on what is left and right  sometimes.

my wife does that ALL the time!!  i'll tease her when ever we're driving somewere, i'll tell her to take a right, when i really mean left, sometimes she catches herself, but for the most part, my daughters are snickering in the back seat.....

as for the fork seals, i've always feared doing mine, glad you were able to do it on your own!!  that might be my next winter project, that and a new front tire.

The dude in the video gets his ounces backwards.  As we all know, everything is based, left and right, from sitting in the driver's seat, not standing in front of it.

I was 2 1/2 hrs., start to finish, and I watched 40 minutes of video instructions while I did it.

Why don't you post the url for that U-Tube video?

I'm sure other members would appreciate it!

Would somebody in the know, look at this seal and tell me what happened.  It looks like somebody tore it up in 3 places with a common screwdriver, yet the dust seal under it was fine.  I have never had cause to do anything in there, so it wasn't me.  No debris of any kind found either.

Ain't no wonder it leaked.

Looks like somebody beat it into place with a punch instead of a proper driver.
