you should use a test light to be sure you have the right wire. Under the right side cover is the best and easiest place to tie in !

Yep, it's an absolute necessity when doing any kind of electrical troubleshooting or wiring work to have in the toolbox:
1) a good test light
2) a volt/ohm meter
It's folly to attempt anything electrical (except maybe changing a light bulb) without proper tools!
