I've been reading posts about desmogging the engine.  Not being the most mechanical minded soul around, what is this?  What does it do to the carbs, How is it carried out?

check shop talk.

it does nothing for performance, mpg, HP, etc. all it does is cleanup the engine area behind the carbs and gets rid of a lot of potential vacuum hose leaks once removed.

It is one of the last stands against the "MAN". LOL.

Really biggest thing it does is like what was said cleans up the top of the engine and it will eliminate lots of potential for vacuum leaks, if your getting poor performance or poor gas mileage then that might be related to vacuum leaks. If you hear lots of ticking sounds at idle then tha might be the Pare valves and they go away during the DeSmog.

It gave me more room on top of the motor and below the air box for other things like DanMarc electric fuel valve and some of the components for my cruise-control.

So no real world HP, mileage increases but if your having any problems even small ones you don't notice they might go away and then your HP or mileage may increase from the removal instead of a repair to the system.

My bike seems to run with much more authority down the road now but I did a few other things during my HUGE project list recently.
DeSmoged
ReJetted the CARBS completly rebuilt the CARBS
Polished/smoothed inside of intake runners installed new rubber parts.
Changed stock ICM to a DynaTek 3000.
Put my exhaust pipes back to just about stock configuration.
Changed to a Pingel Petcock.
All of which has the potential of changing how the bike runs for the better or the worse.

Anyone ever desmog a California bike? I haven't seen anything mentioned about them.

Yes, the CA bike is a little different because of the extra hoses on the carb rails that go to the charcoal cannister.  You cannot plug those hoses up or the carbs will puke fuel all over the place.  The last thing we did was to attach these to a little air filter element that dangled somewhere in there.

Other than that, it is the same as the other models.

the California carbs will not work on my bike with the way I have it set up. You can plug all the vacuum tubs coming off the carbs and even fill the tubs with led and cap them off still would not work right. So I bought a set of non California carbs and re built them and they work great!!!
Flintstone powered bike? I think not but I have thought about tearing the floor board out of my truck. I am taking applications for a Barney, do you want to apply?
