The Twilight Zone

« on: June 28, 2011, 10:37:18 AM »

as I've had factory harleys that could out run it! I don't know what has happened but sure hope someone can help!

Oh it just happened over the weekend on over a 300 mile trip. Yesterday was the worst as it seemed so long to get to 75 and longer to 85. At 85 I give it WOT and it actually lost speed, hesitated and gradually come back up and FINALLY reached 100 mph. Now it never skipped once and ran smooth- just no power.

I have 10k miles on her  and changed plugs at 8K when I got it. I've ran a couple of tanks of Techron a few month ago to make sure carbs were clean but no problems at all.

All I've done was basic maintainece and a new battery last week. I noticed the fan coming on fairly frequent and making a noise louder than other bikes. I've had the bike since February so haven't really noticed the fan until this 95-100* weather. Coolant level is full and been changed and temp indicator hasn't come on so I assume the temp is fine.

Thanks in advance for any help.  Smiley

+1 From what you've said it sounds like starvation could be the culprit.

It could also be the #6 vacume line has a crack.
Does the bike have a fuel filter? Tank screen could be partially plugged. Try running with the petcock on reserve, that part of the screen may be less clogged.

I agree with the others, it sounds like a fuel delivery issue.. What petcock does it have?? If its an OEM then I would suspect it.. Check it over including the vacuum line..  If it has an in-line fuel filter, install a new one..

the diaphragm in my OEM petcock developed a leak and would not hold vacuum, therefore not opening the fuel completely.  It would run but not too well, limped it home.
Take the vacuum line off of cylinder #6 vacuum port and pull a slight vacuum on it, if it will not hold a vacuum, the diaphragm on the vacuum side in the petcock is leaking.
Either buy a petcock repair kit Honda part # 16953-MBZ-B51 or replace it with the now infamous Pingel manual.  The repair kit is about 1/3 the cost of the Pingel.

Thanks guy for all your help. Ok, the bike only has 10k on her and is completely stock other than the Cobras. The petcock is OEM and the tank has never been off so i don't know about the fuel filter.

I will try the simple stuff first like opening my cap going down the road. If this works, where is my vent? If that's not it I'll try it on reserve.

Thanks again!  cooldude

The vent nipple is on the bottom of the tank (pointing downward) toward the rear. A rubber tube is slid on to the metal nipple and then continues to the underside of the bike.  If you don't have really big hands you can reach under from the left side (fuel selector switch side) and feel the nipple and tube.  If you have the chrome cover that covers the hole around the selector switch you will need to remove the cover first.  Last night when putting my tank back on and forgetting to attach the vent tube is when I discovered that not only is it possible to feel the nipple and tube with the tank in place I was also able to attach the tube.  Sometimes the vent tube gets pinched or clogged with gunk on the bottom end.
