I used Engine Fogging Spray (oil), and sprayed it into all the holes in the tank, fuel filler and petcock, along with a little in the vent tube. I didn't find the spary to actually "fog" the tank, but was a spray. I used 1 can to prevent rust and remove the smell of fuel, as I was selling it and shipping it off later.
It smelled like regular lubrication oil, chain lub, so I would use what ever you have on hand. Just remember to spray it in and turn the tank over and around with the holes covered, till you think you have coated all the surfaces.
I wouldn't use WD-40 except for a short time, like a few months.
Pour in about 1 gal of gas, to rinse out the oil when it's time to use. I don't even think you need to do this. Oil will mix with the fuel, and burn when you run it through the engine. Unless you used a LOT of oil, you may not even notice the blue smoke coiming out the exhuast.
I'm the one Gordon sent the tank to. I knew about the oil before he shipped it, but in my excitement, I forgot, and didn't rinse it out or anything. I had pretty much drained any "loose" oil, when I got it, turning it over to replace the petcock, etc. After install, I filled it up and ran it. Never noticed any smoke or anything, or "funny runnin'". Never a problem. I'm looking for the spray, to do the standard tank I took off. Not sure if I want to sell the standard tank or not, no reason to keep it, but not too much of a market for it either, I'd guess.
Thanks again, Gordon. I ride 25 miles each way to work, so have been filling the tank, at 4 days, same gas station. Always within a mile or two of 198 miles, when I've filled it. The other day, was pouring down rain, when I passed the station, at 199 miles. Didn't want to stop, so kept going. At 201 miles, sputtered, and I had to go to reserve. This tank is great!!!
