Been having intermittent starting problems lately. Looking at some of the existing posts with similar problems, I note a recurring suggestion of replacing the battery. How can you tell for certain it's ready to be replaced?
Mine shows 12.88v after a trickle charge, 12.71v after riding, 8v during starting and 13.2+v at idle.
The engine turns over easily but does not fire when the starter button is pushed and then the throttle is opened . When the throttle is closed, it usually starts, but at an idle rpm.
Any thoughts?

The 8 volt reading during starting is a concern. Typically a load test of 1/2 the CCA for 15 seconds fails if the voltage drops below 10 volts. If this battery is over 3 years old, I recommend replacement. If still within warranty, take it in and let them test it to see if it still has proper capacity.

Well, I looked it up and I bought this battery in Jan of 2005, so I guess it has served it's time-in-grade adequately. But, it is turning over and spinning the engine like usual so didn't want to replace if it is still good.
Someone had mentioned possible vacuum leak on cylinder 6, so I rplaced that hose and not much difference.
So if no other thoughts, I'm shopping for a battery!

8 volts is enough to keep the motor cranking, but usually won't be enough to run the ignition module at the same time. That's most likely the cause of the starting only at closed throttle. Open throttle while cranking causes higher pressure in the combustion chamber, which needs a higher voltage spark.

RIK: The coils need 9.6 VDC to fire the plugs. The 8V reading during cranking is the culprit. New battery my friend. Need any help? I'll be right over. Just holler.

Any cranking voltage below 9.5v is a concern.. While your at your friendly battery store looking at new batteries, have them perform a load test just for the heck of it.. After all, you'll be turning the old battery in anyway.. These monsters need a lot of ' Uummph' to roll these engines over which doesn't leave a lot left over for the ignition system.. But, while you're installing your brand spanking new battery, check and clean all the starting system connections.. 6 years from a battery isn't too bad, not all batteries are created equal..
