Thanks to all y'all who counseled patience, and especially to Cowboy and Six Guns who checked out the bike I was looking at for $8200 in Ft. Worth.   I think I got something really nice here for quite a bit less money.

Here's what I got for $5600 and only a few miles west of our home in Richmond:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_rdcZ1QQitemZ110707474209QQruZhttpQ3aQ2fQ2fshopQ2eebayQ2ecomQ3a80Q2fiQ2ehtmlQ3fQ5ffromQ3dR40Q26Q5ftrksidQ3dp5197Q2em570Q2el1313Q26Q5fnkwQ3d110707474209Q26Q5fsacatQ3dSeeQ2dAllQ2dCategoriesQ26Q5ffviQ3d1

Visited with the owner the other day.  He's selling it because he got a new Goldwing.  The bike looks pristine & the guy's a structural engineer so that makes me think he's kept the insides as tidy as the outside.

Ya.  I thought having a '97 would be a very cool way to be very cool, so cool in fact that most people wouldn't even realize the depth of my coolness.   Cool

Now... about helmets... "?"

Still makes no sense. It's already got one Dungeons and Dragons name. It really doesn't need another.

I'm getting the impression you're really not going to fit in around here.

I'm further getting the impression that you're really not interested in trying.

I'll hold my impressions, but not for long.  I've made that mistake before.

I passed on a purple/white 97 Valk and bought an 01 Yammy Midnight Star instead... only kept it four months before selling and getting my 99 Interstate.  I love the I/S but if I had purchased the 97 Valk I would still be riding it and happy for a long time!  I too think the color scheme is cool and unique, like the Valk itself!

Great choice, cool ride, me like!  Cool

Nice bike there sir.

Enjoy it to the max and you have accepted no substitute as your ride.

Because there is no substitute to the Hot Rod Cruiser that turns heads and makes you different from the

herd of other cruisers that are available.

In fact that is why I own one.

Probably would not have made the leap twice if it were not for such a good bunch of caring and forgiving

people that inhabit the land that is other wise called the VRCC.

Thanks VRCC for being patient whilst I grew up a little and became a better citzen of this place we call the World.

Thanks and Nice Bike you bought there StretchPhoto

Valkyrie = "Chooser of the slain" in Old Norse.  In the earliest sagas and depictions, they were a winged dragon-like creature.  Later sagas depicted them as warrior or shieldmaiden demigoddesses.  Actually, have you ever wondered why when you think of "Angels," a beautiful maiden with wings comes to mind?  There is no mention of female Angels in the Bible and I do not think there is in Judaism either.  The female Angel is an amalgamation of Christianity and Norse mythos that came around during the time of pre-medeival Christian missionaries in Scandanavia and one of many results of Christian/Pagan compromise.

Interesting you mention that Tiger.  I was just going to post the planned route for my first ride.  It may raise a few eyebrows, but I think a few days on open road will be a great way to get acquainted with my new friend.

As some of you know, my wife and I, along with Mr. Chung (http://stretchphotography.com/chung/pages/STRETCH_081015_0015.htm), are moving next week from Richmond, VA, to Champaign, IL, where I'll start as a professor of journalism in a few weeks.

We'll drive together westward out of Richmond, then stop in Goochland at the current owner's house, put the new plates on the bike, and I'll continue the trip to Champaign on the Valk.

Loosely, the schedule is thus:

Day 1 - Goochland, VA, to Huntington, WV (6 hours)

Day 2 - Huntington, WV, to Louisville or Cincinnati (3 hours)

Day 3 - Cinci or Louisville to Champaign (4 hours)

I grew up riding dirt bikes, and have taken one long road trip from Dothan, AL, to Columbia, MO, on a borrowed bike back in '89.  So it's been a while, but I can't think of a way I'd rather leave the town I love, have lived in since 1990 and will miss dearly than on my Valkyrie.

I just kind of always assumed angels were asexual in terms of private parts.

Willow, you might be right.

In the Bible, the appearance of angels (nearly?) always resulted in fear and trembling on the part of the humans they appeared to.  They were pretty scary creatures.

And... interesting reference to the Christian/Pagan thing.  More of contemporary Christianity is based on Pagan ritual than many North American Christians choose to acknowledge.  The Christmas Tree is a great example.

I believe you did good, so congrats. I always have a little chuckle when I read some of the answers on Valkyrie e-bay questions. Some info is right on and some is wayyyyy out there. I'd love to see a dyno sheet for 110 hp on a non-blown 97! But if they are that bad there is a 21k mile 97 for sale a few miles from me for under 5K, hmmmm. Plus if I read the ad right, some of the latter model Valks have helical cut gears, who knew??? Grin

Hey SP,

I hope your route is mostly backroads as opposed to interstate.  IMO, you'll enjoy the trip more and learn much more about your new baby that way instead of doing mostly the ol' sit & twist.

I would venture to say that not only does he NOT fit in, he has NO intention of trying to:

Some of you people behave like cult members at times and frankly to those of us with actual experience in such matters it's a little off-putting.

Secondly, my opinion is as educated as anyone else's. In fact, it's quite likely that I'm more educated on the subject than most people here

Lastly, what I know I know. I do not and will not tiptoe in conversations where I am confident.

If arguing passionately about subjects I'm confident in makes me seem like I'm a know-it-all, well I don't really give a s**t.

Ya, I was thinking the same thing, but we have to be put there when the moving truck arrives, so time may be of the essence. We'll learn more about the schedule from the movers a few days before they pick up our stuff.

Also, Noni, my wife, and Mr Chung, our shih-tzu, will follow/lead in her car, and I want to make the drive as easy for her as possible.  She was so generous to offer to drive her car, rather than relax as a passenger while I drove... That act of kindness really made my purchase of this bike at this time possible.

So we'll see.  But I agree with u totally.
