She was in the barn feeding the horses...went to lift a bale of hay...and it had a yellow jacket nest IN IT (i've never seen that before...a nest in between bales of hay). they attacked her with a vengeance. Had it been me or Susan (our daughter), i would have likely died....and her probably too...as both of us are HIGHLY allergic to yellow jackets.
Sherry attempted to run from the barn....to the back yard....and to the pool. She had several gates to go thru and about 150 feet. they attacked her THE ENTIRE distance. when she finally got thru the gates and the 150 feet she dove in...clothes and all. Every time she surfaced, they attacked again. LATER, i found about 15 yellow jackets floating in the pool. I also found a trail of still alive yellow jackets on the ground/sidewalk...from the pool to the garage. When i first saw her in the garage, she was tearing her clothes off....soaking wet. I asked what happened...and she told me she dove in the pool after being attacked.
with her clothes off, i could count OVER 45 sting marks. Again, it would have probably killed me. Since we live out in the country, we felt it best to drive her to the hospital (good luck waiting on an ambulance out her in the "sticks"). I called ahead and told them she was coming......what had happened. They were ready for her and put her on an IV and pumped her full of morphine, steroids and one other drug.
She's back home today. she is miserable, but she'll make it. I have to check on her....and i have to get some more prescriptions filled for her today. She had about 50 stings all told. It could have been worse.....but it was pretty scary as it was!

Man, that's scary! I move around hay to feed cows all the time. Yellow jackets are vendictive little s.o.b.'s. I can't imagine getting hit 50 times. Wishing her a speedy recovery.
BTW Can somebody tell me if the adds at the bottom of the page are specific to "key words" in the posting? I've noticed the 1st time I viewed this thread there was an add for "wasp control," now there is an add for "bee keeping" equiptment. Just wondering if that's a coincidence.

This is why I hunt the little bastards down with extreme prejudice. They'll sting you just for looking at them funny. I've got my property pretty clear of them because I set a lot of traps but if I find a nest I kill it as soon as the sun goes down.
And I have found them between bales of hay before. They made a pretty big nest in my archery backdrop one year.

BOTH OF YOU GO GET AN RX FOR EPIPEN TODAY AND FILL THE RX
I am not sure of the spelling
Get the 2 pack because I understand they dont always discharge properly
I only have one. (allergic to a bunch of stuff)have been meaning to get the 2nd.
It gives you about 20 minutes before anaphalaptic shock closes your airway or delays the reaction you are already starting. You must go to the ER immediately as after 20 minutes.................
So glad she is ok Tim

Glad she is ok. Those little bastards are dangerous.
I had a huge nest under an outside storage box close to the back door. I didn't fool around. I called the bug guy and he came out, put on his full bee outfit and moved the box. Instant cloud of yellow jackets all over his suit. He sprayed the hive looking for the queen. Killed her and the rest. Well worth the price.

That can be a toss up, I personally wouldn't recremend it. Depends on where you are. They can *never* find us at the farm. It would take 30 mins plus. Even for a fire we've never had a better response in our area then 20 minutes, and they usually have smoke/etc to guide them in. The dispatch guys often spend a lot of time arguing about which entity serves us as well. We're about 8 minutes from a really good hospital. We head out and call. In one case where the person was in respiratory distress, they met us at a known location (the little convenience store down the road) so they could start treatment sooner.

Thats kinda what I meant about a toss up. Usually Fire can get there faster and start treatment. Esp if they have a BLS unit. Out west once a lady said we have a ambulance 40 miles away if they need it.
