I know you'll probably think I'm crazy here guys, but I'm thinking about gettng a system to talk with my wife while on a trip. She likes to ride with me on longer rides, but also has a drifter she rides on shorter rides. I,jst wondering which system will work the best with our '99 Interstate and when we ride seperate. What are you guys using and having good luck with?
Thanks for any information, Mnvalkrider

You're I/S already has an intercom on it.  All you need are helmet headsets and the cords to plug into a 5 din system.  If you have the cb on it then mount one on hers and you can talk bike to bike.  Check J&M for the pieces you need.

I just went through some of this, just driver to passenger on the I/S.
I started out with the cheapest available J&M headsets from WingStuff.com and I plugged them in to verify I/S equiptment and it worked BUT!!! The mikes on that set were obscenely HUGE, so they were promptly returned would NOT fit in the helmet with my head was in there. So then I went for broke and ordered the J&M 629-Elite series with newest mike and in helmet speakers. Seem like this will work fine, wife and I tested them in the yard and will try them on the road tomorrow evening. I used my set on the way home from work yesterday and the sound quality was absolutely fine in my lack of experience opinion. I also added the passenger mute/volume control with CB mike talk control button for current use for her headset volume control and mute with future CB upgrade.

Now with these headsets (629 elite) you will also need to order a lower section cable/cord.
This entire setup was expensive but I am betting it will help make the wife happy on the rides.

Just from memory here are the prices.
Headset $169.00 X 2
Lower Z series cord $49.99 X 2
Passenger control handle wiring $129.99

Plus tax and I think I got free shipping. I also payed for theWingStuff.com VIP club witch actually shaved a few dollars off the total price and they were the absolute cheapest I found. So it cost about $600 WOW!!!! But if the wife is kept happy then the Daddy will be rewarded and I am the Daddy.

The bike to bike I have no idea. Sorry but the helmet to helmet Bluetooth seems to be pretty good options but they have very limited range, handle bar mount J&M CB for her bike and J&M 629 elites for both of you then a CB on your I/S wow maybe you should sell some of your internal organs.

+1 on the Scala system. I have the older Scala system and it is great for driver to passenger. Can also talk to couple that we ride with as long as they are within 1/4 mile. It does take a little while to get use to the controls, but still a good set up.

I use an Oneal tirade helmet to bluetooth music from my ipod. It is comfy at not heavy. You can pair them to talk helmet to helmet but have not tried it. It also works with your cell phone I can answer calls at 75mph.

I have the Scala Cardo G4's, also. Helmet to helmet, 1 mile range bike to bike, talks Bluetooth to my phone, so I have Pandora, or StreamFurious on all the time, plus hands-free telephone. Total control, with just a few finger touches. You can get them either with boom or corded mikes.

I have 4 complete sets - don't ask me how I ended up with that. Roll Eyes Will be selling some, shortly. But, I have enough to lend anyone that rides with me!!    Grin cooldude

I had all the others, when I had my Wings. I like these the best, of any of them. They go for around $350 a matched powerset of two, if you watch carefully.

If you use Bluetooth, be aware that you can only sync about 3 or 4 units/devisous at a time. You need to look into this before you go out and think you can talk to every one using a Bluetooth, but you can with a CB.

that's why I have both CB and Scala G4...and 4 sets are the most you can link at any time.

The nice thing about the G4 with the newest software update is that you can communicate with other scala headsets (backwards compatible too) by simply pressing the correct button sequence.  This can be done on the fly...when you see another rider with a scala headset.  It's getting closer to CB communication without all the immature truckers blasting crap in your ear on channel 19... tickedoff

Here's a good article....

http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-intercoms/cardo-scala-rider-g4/review.htm

Good luck...we love ours.

I can verify if you would like , but to get these prices they make you join their VIP program if your only buying one or two low cost items no big savings but if your spending around a GRAND (or more in my case) over the last 2 months then yes the VIP for $39 will save lots of cashola!!!

The only other thing I am concerned with is that we run with 1/2 helmets. I'm wonder about the wind on the mic. Can't be good. It looks like there are some really nice system out there. Thanks again and enjoy your ride! Mnvalkrider.

Any system that you get that goes through the bike will have a lot of background noise.  When my wife would plug in her headset the noise level seemed to double.  Wind noise was very annoying.  We have tried a couple of J&M's and the chatterbox over the years.  All of them sucked.  We decided to go with the Scala G4 this year and they work great.  No noise until you talk, it's like you don't have anything.  I would spend the extra bucks and get those, cheaper in the long run.  My wife was getting ready to kill me because I kept changing headsets and helmets.

I'm wonder about the wind on the mic. Can't be good. It looks like there are some really nice system out there.

On the Scala G4, there are two kinds of mics - a "corded" that fits in a full face, and a "boom", for open face or 3/4. I have used it a few times with the phone, and my wife says she can barely tell the difference. And we've only talked together the once, and I couldn't hear any wind on hers. the boom has a windsock on it.

Also, on the G4, if you are going faster, it senses it on the mic, and the music compensates, by getting louder - a nice touch!

As for only communicating with 4 others - I never ride with more than a couple other riders, so it doesn't matter to me. Others it might. And if I AM on a group ride, I usually don't know anybody, anyway, so again, no matter. Just me, of course - the anti-social being that I am!!   tickedoff

I also have the Sena SMH10 and have used the G4 and Chatterbox FRS-X2 in the past.  The sound quality in the Sena blows them all away.  The G4 and Sena are both easy to use both between bikes and rider to passenger.  I wouldn't recommend a chatterbox FRS to my best enemy.

I've got an Autocom Pro-7 system with MP3 player , GMRS/FRS handset and Garmin 2610 GPS hookups. Once the VOX setting is correct, it works really well IMHO. Only hindsights are that it takes Autocom headsets only, mic impedance is something really out of the ordinary, and the BMW dealerships that used to carry it, have discontinued the brand. eBay or Autocom UK are still options. The box fits in very snugly under the original tool bag next to the battery under the seat.

Here's a little review of the system that I managed to stumble across. For most part I do agree with the author but I'd like to point out that the isolation adapters are absolutely mandatory to prevent ground loops. Without them ( and right kind of them ) you will end up with interference and all kinds of noises

http://www.angelridevideos.com/reviews/autocomp7.html

The system would allow me even to hook up my phone into it but thus far I have absolutely refused to do that. Phone is a distraction that I can definitely do without.  I might consider radar detector

Cheers!

2 more thoughts on the Sena.  There are mounting brackets that go for about 30-40 each that allow you to mount the unit on different helmets or to use a boom mic, flat mic, ear buds, their speakers, or any combination thereof.

I really like the Sena/G4 style devices because it is all self contained.  Nothing to wire into the bike, no electrical noise to deal with, no cords dangling in the wind and forgetting to be unhooked when you get off the bike and rip wiring out... tickedoff

You and also get different base mounts to use earbuds, velco in speakers and iPod jack.  I got the older version and they offered to upgrade my device for 50 dollars for the newer version.  The sound is great.
