I had read that the Valkyries sold in Japan were offered with a reverse gear option.  Is this true? Did it run off of the starter like the Goldwings do? Has anyone ever added reverse to their Valk?  Or am I just believing a story?

I think its true that Japanese models have a reverse, I do believe it works similar to the Gold Wing (off the starter) I do not believe anyone has ever added reverse to an American Valkyrie, but, hey, I have been wrong before

This was brought up the other day.

You are correct that the ones in Japan has reverse but it is more than just working off the starter.  There were pictures posted of this lunchbox sized box that goes up under the bike near where your centerstand would be and the entire thing adds like 100lbs.

Too much extra crap if you ask me.

The reversing system was exclusive to the Japanese import model.
Incorporating the same system as used in the Goldwing SE, this feature is unique to the Valkyrie models imported into Japan.
(operated electrically using the starter motor)
