If you want to ride mainly blacktop buy a 650 Vstrom. More powerful engine.

Cruising at highway speeds isn't good for a KLR.

Tooooo Late Joe....I bought it last night cooldude "very sweet bike" I picked it up for my neighbor's son. He just graduated from UT this spring and is going to take a year off and kick around out west.
He was wanting me to find him a dual sport, so Big Al fixed me up with his.

Buy the "Eagle Mike" balancer (you can find the store on KLR650.net).  I know, I know... don't believe everything you read on the web... but mine WAS broken after only 3000 miles.

Also, it'll burn oil at anything over 4500-5000 rpm (a little different depending on the bike)... so if you make frequent high speed runs, check you oil often.

Other than that, almost everything on that bike can be fixed with duct tape and/or zip ties!!   cooldude

Nice bike T-Bird, He will like it! I have a 98 KLR, and if push came to shove, of the three bikes I own, it might be the last one I  would sell. A KLR opens up a new world of riding. It will tour. Long distance riding is not "hard" on the engine. People ride them everywhere, including Alaska,Baja and South America. I rode mine to Death Valley two years ago. I also commute on it alot, mostly freeway, almost 80 miles round trip a day. It does great. It truely is a jack of all trades, master of none. That is not a bad thing at all, just the opposite. See a dirt road you might like? Go for it! It's fun! Only a couple of things to keep an eye on. First, Google " Doohickey". It is: Idler shaft lever. A known weak link in the KLR engine, yes even that new 09. The KLR engine is basically the same as when they made them a 650 from a 600. Your engine is the same as my 98, basically. If the arm or the spring breaks, bad things happen to the motor. You can but an upgraded "Doo" and have it put in or do it yourself. Second, keep an eye on your oil LEVEL, check it EVERY time you stop for gas. Not hard to do, just stand the bike up and check the site guage, if it's almost to the top of the site glass, your good to go. Other than that, RIDE IT! Just don't forget to stop for gas every 300 hundred miles or so. Yep, with 6.2 gallons and right about 50 miles to the gallon, you can go along ways.  On the net, KLR.net is a great site, full of information and great people that are just as devoted to their KLR's as everyone here  is about their Valkyries. I am very lucky to own three of the best motorcyles, in my opion, a Goldwing , a Valkyrie and a KLR. Enjoy the KLR.

Ah yes... "doohickey" was the word i was going for.   cooldude  Set it correctly (Eagle Mike version) and it smooths out the engine a bit.  Less vibes.

T-bird that bike has never even fell over off the kick stand.

Not a scratch on it and never seen the red line even once.

Did not baby it to death, broke it in right and it runs the way a KLR should.

He will have alot of fun with that, just tell him to be careful and watch out for cages.

Here's to the young man that is about to buy it.

Thanks for taking it off my hands as well, don't need 4 bikes.

The mean streak is leaving Saturday, the guy you told me about in Atlanta is buying it,, Lord Willing.

Thanks for that too Terry.

That will leave me with Ole Blue and the Black Interstate.

I can dig it.

COntrary to the Gentleman that said it will burn oil, it does not,

Interstate, back roads, the Dragon, The Devils Triangle.

never saw a day I had to add any oil.

Doo-Hickey is not a problem on this model. The doo-hickey as they call it, is to cancel vibrations, the things use to fall

off on the od KLR's, but this one is beefed up.

Totally redesigned, Head andCam, better flowing exhaust, bigger spokes, 39mm versus 37 mm forks on the 09.

Better arodynamics as the fairing is fixed  to the frame and the bike is more stable than the old models.

Apples and oranges is the difference.

A lot of improvements and a better all around bike stock

The 08's did have a lot of problems but the 09 is fixed in all departments.

The front and rear brakes a problem on the older ones, no longer an issue, will stop on a dime now.

Poke Sgt.Marty over at the COHCC.org, he's taken his KLR about as far north as you can go and down to the tip of South America, He's knows everything about the bikes..

Thanks all. I'll know next week if I get it. The man that owns it is 71 years young. Maybe there is life after 60.

Watch it, 72 here and starting to think dual sport.  Into sport and sport cruise now.  In the last few years have been very close to pulling the trigger on either the KLR, or the 650 V Strom.  Have two Kaws now, a ZX14 and Concours 1400, both super bikes, so will prolly stay with the brand.

I can say that there's life after 70, in fact it's not too bad after 80.  My Vstrom 1000 suits me although the 650 is better off road, lighter and easier to handle.

I had a 2002 KLR and it ran fine.  I was going to buy a 2009 but couldn't flat foot it.  With my knees that's a must!

Popcorn, I went on a 150 mile ride in the east TN mtns yesterday on the KLR and loved it so much I went on advrider.com and bought me one just a few minutes ago. I think you will like one and hope you get it. Maybe we can hook up with Britman on some of his adventure rides.
I liked the color of big Al's better and I know how good he takes care of his bikes....I wished the buyer hadn't of picked it up this afternoon or I would of kept it and sold him this one I just bought.

That is a good ride you bought there Terry.

It all ready has all the tip over bits installed.

SO you are ready to dump it and keep on rolling.
