Wanting to add a gps to my 2000 interstate. Not sure if costly zumo or maybe a nuvi. I want to mount the device in the center where the handle bar clamp is. My bike has a (handlebar holder) a solid piece with four bolts instead of two separate clamps holding the handle bars. The mounts I have seen are designed to attach to round handle bars, not a solid plate. What are you guys doing here. I have found pictures of gps mounted in the center, but no detail of installation.  Thanks

I mounted my RAM Mount Ball in the center of the top plate of the risers.   I have a NUVI 660 with a RAM Mount.   And I don't make it a habit of riding in the rain, so my NUVI is fine, but if I do get caught I have a little baggie that will work if need be (or I just take it off and trunk it).

#1 thing to do, is to find a mount for a GPS, before you buy the GPS.

I bought one, turns out there isn't a mount for it, only a universal from RAM. If I would have known, I would have bought a different brand.

I have about 4 ram mount balls scattered across the cockpit. 2 on the brake lever clamp and 2 of the Ubolt type around the bars.  I use them for gps, cup holder, camera mount, all kinds of uses.

Ram makes a ball mount that replaces one of those four screws that go into the risers.  Other end is a plate that holds whichever GPS you have.  I have a Nuvi 500 with this mount.  500 is waterproof.  I have ridden in the rain several times with it and no issues.  Google "Ram Mounts" and you will find all sorts of choices.  Stan

FYI
Had mine mounted down there on a handlebar mount and could never see it in the daylight. I now have a ram mount at the brake lever bracket; it gives more versatility on angle and proximity. I still have to shade it with my hand on bright days but it is a vast improvement.

Here is what I did. Sometimes the sun will wash out the display but not that often. I showed it mounted on my Standard but transferred it later to my I/S with no problems.

I bought a Tomtom last Christmas during the sales for $88.00. Bought a weatherproof handlebar mount from Mountguys.com for $23.00. Clamped to the bars to the left of the riser bracket it works just fine. The shadow of the tank bag on long trips shades it from the sun, or I can tilt it down in the sun and it gets me there; mostly I use it for ETA and speedo. I'll mount it centre when I change to the Lamonster risers (no plate between the risers).

Shadow VT750 clamps fit right on and replace the 4 bolt clamp which frees up the space between the risers for adding additional items like a GPS.

I have the Zummo with supplied mount which works nicely but pricey.
I saw this on the Goldwing forum where a guy fabricated his own.  I think he could make a few bucks selling these.  You could always try a local machine shop.

I just mounted mine on the handle bar clamp with industrial strength velcro. Been there two years including Alaska and back. Peels right off when you want to remove it for the night.

leadermotorcycles.com for the GPS mounting hardware and powerlet.com for the 12v cables which you attach to the battery. Works great.  I have a Nuvi 1490T on my Valkyrie and getting a bluetooth for the HJC helmet to hear it with.  Although if you don't have loud pipes I can hear it fairly well at speed.

Go to Rammounts website and they have  any mount for any gadget you need to mount although some are a little pricey.

I got a Nuvi 665 for Christmas. I am mounting the unit with a ram mount. What can I do about mounting the antenna? The 665 antennna should be at least 6 iches away from the unit itself. ANY IDEAS??

This Works for me!

Just take your time, put a blanket over your tank when you remove the caps and cover off and don't let your bars drop when you loosen it, I just drilled and tapped hole for my Ram ball mount.
