« on: July 23, 2011, 08:27:39 PM »

As a lot of places the temp here is 105-110*! I thought I'd take the Valk for a spin and unbelievable heat coming off the heads. It's always been warm to hot but nothing like this and of all times I wore shorts! Wow! After a few hours I hop on my water cooled VTX...with the shorts and it was a lot cooler til I touched my rear pipe and blistered my leg!! That did it for today! Lol!

Is there a sure way to keep the heat off? Bakers?  I ride a standard. crazy2 uglystupid2

My brother had a 305cc honda scrambler. Both of those pipes came up on one side. Can't recall which side. The gal i was seeing then wore shorts when i picked her up. Tried to talk her into jeans. No freakin way-she insisted on wearing the shorts. She burned herself on the inside of what was a very shapely and tasty thigh. I'm guessing she still has the scars. To this day-don't care HOW hot it be-this old man wears long pants when ridin. RIDE SAFE.

Yeah I gotta try something! I know Bakers are high so is there another brand cheaper?

About the shorts I don't usually wear them  much on the bike.. but 110*...I didn't care! Besides the ladies tell me I have purty legs!!!  2funny 2funny

I wore shorts once on the Valk too.  Found out exactly how hot the those heads get on a hot summer day.  Won't make that mistake again.   uglystupid2

What gets me is seeing all of the (mostley) Harley riders 'round here wearing shorts and flip-flops when they're riding.  I'm far VERY from anything like an ATGATT kind of guy....but FLIP-FLOPS?

Well since i posted I haven't wore shorts since and won't either! In this same heat a thick pair of jeans seems to deflect the heat some and ain't near as hot on my legs! I bet that gal didn't wear shorts on the bike again..if she ever rode with you again! Grin Back when I was young and dumb in the early 70s', I rode dirt bikes with shorts and wiped out and when I went down the bike was on top of me and the pipe was frying my right calve could hear it sizzling like bacon!! The scar is still there! uglystupid2

Yeah they get hot and I burnt my self on the right head! I don't know how the HD boys wear shorts because when I had mine that rear cylinder pipe was unbearably hot with the air cooled engine. Now my VTX ain't bad....as long as you don't touch the pipe like I did! Lol  Now the flip flop thing is nutty. They lose their footing, they will be flopping!!! 2funny 2funny 2funny

Down here in the ozarks in this high heat high humidity-see an awful lot of folks in those string t shirts and shorts and flip flops ridin all manner of 2 wheel mobiling. I don't skimp on footwear. You only have to dab a foot ONCE at 70 or 80 M P H to be reminded not to do that never no more. 2funny Mo requires helmets-but when i was in Il with my brother i could understand not using it-but couldn't bring myself to ride without my helmet. Summer i keep my head shaved but mama's hair is below her shoulders some. On the ride yesterday didn't take it long to be a wet red mop. coolsmiley Ya it be hot but i still ride. RIDE SAFE.

Saw a dude ridin an inline four sumthin with a speedo, flip flops and sunglasses, and a smile.
I asked my son if he knew how they were gonna get him off the freeway if he went down.
He said he did not. I told the lad "With a hose". Took a few minutes for him grasp the scene.

And here I thought it was just me. Went out and ran some errands on the Valk yesterday - gone 'bout an hour and a half, maybe an hour total on the bike. When I got home, I was totally washed up and wrung out. Changed into dry clothes, sat down on the couch and died for an hour, till my bride woke me for supper.

I know I'm now old and fat, but I don't remember being this affected by the heat before. Gonna hafta give up summer riding, I guess, or move someplace cooler. Damn!

Yeah it ain't fun riding at 105*+!! But we have a ride this Saturday with over 1000 bikes with a lot of stop and go and the weather air temp is supposed to be 100 and this humidity will probably put the heat index @ 115*!!! And I'm wearing the thickest JEANS I can find! lol 2funny 2funny

Even a water pumper has parts that are way to hot fer human flesh. Any flesh for that matter. Common sense(yeah yeah i know-went there anywho) or lack there of well you know. Still amazes me though-$20000-25000 bike-latest state of the art carbon fibre helmet-mid four figures fer the head protection-and right next to nothing on their body and feet. And no-i be nowhere near perfect when it comes to safety equipment. Gets hot out i look fer shady spots and handi marts. 2funny Takin a couple of heavy duty half gallon jugs filling with water about 90% and freezing(DO NOT leave the lids on when freezing-don't ask me how i know that) gives you cold water on the bike when you stop for a good portion of the day. You will get condensation in the bag but works o-k in my hard bags. Gotta thank my brother(da prez) for that idea. Works good. We were gone about 4 and a half 5 hrs this past saturday in 90+ degrees heat and had ice in the jugs when we got home. I'm also not above soaking the helmet liner. Be dripping wet-feels good at around 70 or 80 per. Ya'll got some other ideas bout beatin the heat-might just be a good place to share here. RIDE SAFE.

The Baker wings on my Valk blow LOTS of hot air back on me. As hot as it's been it's miserable to ride. I can't find any position of the Bakers that makes it even close to comfortable to ride in the weather we've had this summer. I'd rather stay home or take the car or pickup with a/c. I love to ride but when it's this hot riding isn't any fun.

X-guy what leads you to think it ain't hot here?? Our heat indexes for the last 2 weeks or more during daylight hours have been in excess of 100 degrees or more. Indexes at night have been low 80s to low 90s. My a/c has been running 24/7 fer a while now. Just like the cold in winter i don't handle heat well any more either. Just another side effect of old age i reckon. It's 86 degrees here right now with 80% humidity and i are going out fer a ride. Gotta have some wind NOW. 2funny Couple a months i WILL be b-tching about how COLD it are. Ain't no way to keep cranky old farts happy. :tickedoff Stay cool and RIDE SAFE.

I'd like to know how the wings can deflect heat. They are either closed which lets no air in so the engine heat just comes up to you. Or they are open which brings in hot ambient air over the engine and back on you. They work well when it's cold or when it's warm. The aren't worth a crap when the weather is as hot as it's been here.

Tell ya what wurks fer me-whether i be sweaty or not. Works way better when your all sweaty though. Stop at a walmart or a k-mart. Most of em got a bench just inside the door. Go wash yer face in the can then come out and sit in their A/C fer awhile. Benches filled up-stand close to em-they WILL get up and leave iffin yore sweaty enough. 2funny 2funny The usually got a water fountain close to the door to. Rehydrate on their dime. Grin RIDE SAFE.

Florida is even cooler than here!! Anyway pretty soon it'll be too cold! We'll' always have something to talk about! 2funny

After a nice ride in the southern Arizona, two doors northa hell, heat we have EVERY summer I jump into the spa to cool off. Its only 99 degrees in there. A flannel shirt soaked and a long sleeve cotton shirt over that works real good. Ya stand under the hose here and youre dry in 25 miles.
I got caught inna microburst and had hail between the gastank and the seat, my shoes were full and I was glad for a full face helmet. 28 miles later I was dry.

The Bakers do a pretty good job on my standard, but nothing seems to help on the IS.  The IS is much hotter than the standard.
