I wanted to know if any other Valk owners are also Ham Radio Operators. I am thinking of adding a Ham Radio to my bike and started thinking if others on this board might also be Ham's. My call is KI4YLA and my wife Carol (Lil Girl) is KJ4DCD.

I sorta put Ham Radio on the back burner since getting back into this motorcycle hobby about 10 years ago. I still have some equipment in the ham shack, and towers etc. Never really thought about installing anything on the bike. I already get in trouble with a GPS.  Terry Thunderbolt N4TWX |

There are a few of us on here. I don't currently have ham radio installed on the bike, but usually carry a HT with me. I toyed with putting a IC 703 or a ft 817 on my bike...didnt figure any high powered radios would be of much use trying to blow 100 watts near my head, but I do have an extra 706 that would work. Maybe a screwdriver antenna on a rear hitch?  That being said, the FT-10 is a nice dualbander that is water resistant too.... So many choices!! I am on echolink... give me a holler!!! I would think just a small mobile rig.... would be the only thing you might want to take. As someone said I can't see anyone wanting to put out 100watts or 1KW on a bike near their head...  I have a mobile CB I considered using on the Bike... but have not yet had a need for it, and it's still on the shelf. My father was a big Ham before he passed over 10 years ago and we still have some of his Ham stuff in the basement, old Tube stuff tho (if anyone is interested). His call letters were originally W3HFE and then he let it lapse and the new one was KA3RXH. I was in communications during my Naval Career, so I didn't get into that much in my off time.... |

My dad was W3DQW and then W4BLB, after we moved to Alabama in the 50's. When I got out of the service in the 70's, I got my ticket - KB4RHC, but I let it lapse in the mid 80's and haven't been active since. Too much other stuff going on!  |

I'm K9AXM. I was a CW guy until I moved into the apartment. Not sure if I'll try to put up an antenna for HF.
Although I have a 2 meter/ 6meter/ 440 HT, I never was interested in doing anything with ham radio on the motorcycle. To me, riding's a full time attention grabber.

kb0veb here. not active for a few years.
still have my mobile stuff. thought about putting it on the bike but
as was said earlier prefer riding without too much distraction, hardly ever use the radio. the cb on a trip with my buddy is about all.
though it is fun to take an HT and use after stopping for the night.

NzeroGYM...Always got kidded about my call NO GYM since I have a build that shows I haven't spent much gym time.  Like others, ham has taken a back seat after my dad died and I've gotten rid of most of the stuff I've had. Kept my license up tho JIC. Since the proliferation of cell phones it doesn't seem to mean much to do Ham unless you want to CQ foreign countries on the low bands. 2 meters, 440 and others that gave us the much appreciated land line links have been supplanted by cell phones, and you can reach almost anyone anywhere. I have a big backyard and kick around a di-pole or small tower but just can't get the interest going anymore. Too many other things to work on with 4 bikes and 4 boats to keep floating.  |

Fred here.Ki8bp.Using Hamman here on the board.I don't spend much time on the hf bands but do some 2 meter ssb stuff.I finally got an Interstate this year so I now have some tunes but have no interest in talking while I ride.Riding is my getaway time.There is some motorcycle mobile interest in all mc brands so there is a lot of info available as to mounting,antennas,rigs etc but not valk specific.Just start googling.I would be interested in meeting valk hams on the hf bands sometime if anyone else has any interest.73,Fred ki8bp

A two ham family here, KQ4PW Mike and wife KE4WQR Ellen, just used the vhf/uhf HT on the bike for simplex bike to bike stuff. Having been a Goldwing rider for a long time, most bike radio stuff is on the CB band, never got into that end but the modern vhf/uhf HT radios with a head set work good. We are active on HF Saturday and Sunday mornings if you are on the 80m band sometime, drop me a note.

When I am in my cage I always have the Ham Radio on, mostly I just listen to the Ham guys but I also have the local police, fire, etc. Thats the main thing I have missed being on the bike just being able to listen in to all the "Tall Tales". It is also the reason I have fell in love with this board, I tune in just to see what someone has posted, check out a link or see where someone has ridden on their adventures. I will probably mount a Yaesu FT-2800 in the trunk using the AUX jack for listening only.

It would be fun to have the Valkyrie hams get together on HF or even echolink! I agree with nerider2, that I enjoy listening when mobile. I run HF mobile in my cages, and of course 2m/440 as well. I don't really want the distraction while riding the bike, but at times listening wouldn't be so bad.
Any ideas on a freq, and time for a radio round table?
