Looking on a suggested place to stay (motel) somewhere around the Yellowstone area.

I will be making a return trip out to Mammoth Lakes CA for a few nights, meet up with my son and we'll take in Kings Canyon and Sequoia NP's. From there he heads back down south to work and I'll be, bike and weather permitt'n, heading to Yellowstone coming in from the Idaho side.

Also any must-see/must-do's while there?

About how much time should be planned for Yellowstone and Grand Tetons?

Feedback appreciated. That stretch between Mammoth Lakes, CA and Yellowstone looks pretty drab.  Undecided

TIA

I just got back from there last week. We originally were going to spend two nights in Yellowstone but decided after one that was enough. We camped in Yellowstone didn't see any Bears just claw marks on trees.Everything is very expensive and you wouldn't know we are still in a recession. All in all we had a good time and saw a couple of Valkyries.

We stayed in Cody Wyoming. It's a great ride back and forth from there to Yellowstone and the Buffalo Bill/Firearms museum is worth the trip alone. The motel/bar/restaurant in Cody that Buffalo Bill built is a great and historic place to eat.

If you have time, ride the Beartooth highway. It and the Highway to Sun through Glacier Park are incredible and will hopefully be snow free this time of year.

We are going in September to Yellowstone.   Since the park lodging is probably booked up, Cody, WY may be a good place to stay if you want to on the east side of the part.  You can also ride Chief Joseph Scenic Byway and Bear Tooth up to Red Lodge, MT.  Walk the geyser basin where Old Faithful is.   Around Mammoth, you will probably see a herd of Elk.   When we stayed there a couple of years ago in Sept.. there was a huge male elk and with a large group of females/youngsters.   Apparently they stay in the Mammoth area since the grass there is waters and predators don't come into town.   Buffalo seem to be in the east and northeast part of the park.   The Canyon area is very pretty and the waterfall there is quite stunning.

As for Tetons, go up signal mountain for a nice view.   Moose Junction, at the river there.. you may see a moose.. they apparently like that area.
I hope that helps.   The national park website also has decent detail on the park and various activities that go on there.
Also check motorcycleroads.com for the wyoming roads to ride.    Enjoy your trip.. can't wait for ours Smiley

Don't pass up a gas station.    You might regret it later.   They were few and far between back then, not sure about now however, as they might have added a few more gold mines since the late 80's.     They could use a few more.   I only remember like maybe 2 in the whole park.

Daughter & I staid in the Lodge in the park.   Expensive but it was worth it to brag that you had staid there.     Rest of the time was spent in Cody, WY. & surrounding area.    We had a lot of fun visiting museums in Cody, actually spent more time in Cody than the park.

If ya see an animal laying on the ground and think oh that would make a nice photo op, don't do it.    That is the way people get hurt and even killed in the park.      Also, remember, this is an unwritten law.      Animals have the right-of-way no matter what.    Usually, if you ignore them, and only look, they will ignore you.     If they walk towards ya, do not run away, just stand still, they are as curious of you, as you are them.

Daughter and I were there twice, 1st time it was kind of ride through, stopped a couple of times, 2nd time we took almost 3 days to wander around, and stop at every chance we had.   Daughter enjoyed it, she was like 15 then.    All I know, is I had my 86 SEi Gold Wing, da fuelie one.   Dat sum beech, shore did run in da mountains and dat thin air.

I always liked the ride up rt 26 from Alpine Junction to Hoback Junction, then in to Jackson Hole, WY.  Some nice riding along the Snake River...the ride from Idaho Falls on Rt 26 around Palisades Reservoir is OK too.  Lived and worked in IF for almost 4 years and spent a lot of time riding this route.
