Help please

I was running the bike today and all was well.  Went to go for a second ride this afternoon.  Pulled the bike out of the garage.  Ignition switch on, engine switch on, kickstand up, clutch lever in, cockpit lights all appear normal.  Pushed engine start switch and total silence.

A few of extra pieces of information.

I tried to jump start the bike from a car which I have done successfully with a discharged battery.  Nothing changed from the scenario above.

The head light is intermittent when the ignition switch is on.  It will come on sort of at will.  Can't tell if it goes on or off with the starter switch or on/off on its own.  When it is on it appears to be at full brightness as do the idiot lights.

I checked the starter motor 10 amp fuse at the right side cover, replaced it, and no change from the scenario above.

Your thoughts and advice are appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

He's got a post in Shop Talk on how to clean the contacts in the starter button. Relube with Dielectric grease and you'll be good for years.

Headlight troubles along with no start are a strong indication that the problem is the starter switch. Do the maintenance on the switch and I am betting your trouble will be gone  Cool

Might be a ground problem.  Check the terminals on the battery and check the ground cable too.

Most likely the starter button.  The headlights go through the normal contacts and the starter is activated on the off normal, as in when you press the starter button.  Those contacts could have been a little beefier from the factory.

Especially check the end of the battery ground cable on the engine block.  They been known to corrode.  If it is clean the cable end and find a good spot to anchor it to the frame.....  This is a better ground I'm told than the aluminum block.

Yes, its located down by the alt. Follow it from the battery. It can get greasy and road grime.

My symtoms were the same when my starter switch gave up. The previous owner had installed auxilliary lights also connected to the starter switch. I needed a new switch, the contacts were melted into the plastic slide. To avoid future problems I wired all the lights to relays so the starter switch only handles the small amount of current needed to trigger the relays.

Just took mine apart again as I was having issues.  My contacts werent really dirty or corroded.  Mine was more a problem with the two contacts that slide across the 6 pack of contacts.  This time I made sure I bent the two contacts with the rounded ends up.  Used Delectric grease and its like new.
