Out with the old...in with the wooohoooo!!!!

Ottawa, Ontario

« on: August 07, 2011, 06:14:44 PM »

Hi guys and gals,

I have the template ready but I cannot figure out how to put the pictures in.  I will put them in when I figure it out.

The front needs to be bent out 1.5" (use a hacksaw and cut part way through it, first cut on the front and second cut on the back, to make it easier to bend)  The back needs to be bent 1".  Just make sure that the back of the kickshifter does not hit your exhaust.

I used a 1/2" shoulder bolt for the pivot and tapped the threads where it screws in to the 3/8" standard thread.  I used 1/2" id tube, 1.25" long, to space the shifter out.

I realized afterwards that I did the drawing backwards.  I would just print it out and use a photocopier to adjust the size.

Thanks James, I think I have it now.

Here is the template as well as some other pictures.

Glad you figured it out. Two of the pictures came through, but the first one didn't. Unless pictures come through on separate e-mails, this AT&T web mail doesn't work very well.

Any thought in making these and selling them to Valk owners who don't have the tools and equipment to build these?? I'd be willing to pay for one. Brett

There is someone on the board that is doing that, I forget who it is but he was going to put in a query to see who wants them when he has them made up.  I believe he said that he should have them in a couple of weeks.

Hi

I understand that I cannot prevent you from stealing a design. However, I do believe I have avenues to pursue a Trademark violation on the name KickShifter........

Even though you are a thief, have the decency to change the name at least.  Or is there no honor up there either.

Seems like the sensible thing to me, Farther.  Or, license the design to someone. Either sell, or commission?

Chet: who the Heck are you talking to? my design has almost nothing to do with yours. other than it does the same job. when the bugs are worked out i'll be happy to send you a copy for free to verify that!
NOTE: we are having some manufacturer issues. will let you know when they are worked out. Pat Chase

Wow Chet!  There is still a market for your Kickshifter as evidenced by used ones selling on ebay for $300.  You could be capitalizing on this but you chose to close up shop.  It would be interesting for you to tell us which one you consider a thief.  The OP who reverse engineered your unavailable, out of production shifter and offered the design free to other members so they can build their own or is it the member who designed an as yet unseen and unnamed heel toe shifter?

The mounting method looks a lot simpler than the original kickshifter.

It seems like the term "kickshifter" is being used in the same manner as people referring to tissues as "Kleenex" or a photocopy as a "Xerox".

Chet's product quality has always been top notch and based on feedback he always stood behind them, such as when the chrome peeled from the kickshifters.  I can see where he would be a bit upset with someone using the same name....

His products are missed from the marketplace, but others are now making items such as the bar grill to fill the void.

IF Chet has a legit claim to the name then you need to stoip using it.

But if he's not going to offer his product to the public anymore and has nothing to compete with it then he stands to lose nothing and should just quit whining.

I don't care if you sell the design or even make one that looks and functions the same. You can probably improve on it and I have no control over that. Just lay offa the name. I think I have done so much for the Valkryie community over the years to earn some respect.

I have an issue with bscrive not Pat (so far). I note there are some changes to this thread already since I last checked in here like deleted pics and edits.  But, bscrive has definitely made his case in PM's which I won't share here in order not to embarrass him any more than he is already.  Suffice it to say, have at it, but give the name the respect it is due, or is that lost in modern times?

Add-on copied my GL1800 shifter and made them in CHINA with obvious loser quality selling them for less than I could build them for. He did at least respect the name. Unfortunately his shifters SUCKED and did not work causing sticking shifters (my little secret is still with me on how to prevent that) which sullied the reputation of mine because they resembled mine being nearly an exact copy.  So, there went that market. You guys don't really know what it takes......

Anyway, I'm RETIRED. Nobody responded from this community when I needed the help a few years back so I quit. I can't do one-offs. Too much work for little return or even losses. You try it. Forget it.

Again, bscrive actually had the temerity to command me to "build some more" as if he has control over my life.  That kind of arrogance I won't tolerate. He also invited me to leave by the BACK DOOR! I'll leave by the front door, thank you, and will let you know when you can follow me.... oh, wait. You already are.

Guys, I donate the design, just give me my name.  I earned it.

Thanks Chet, thanks for clearing the air in a manner that doesn't again elevate tensions and vitriol. I hope someone does follow through and create a replica that will function as well as yours does. I have two and wouldn't want to own a Valkyrie without one. Now about your design secret . . .

I just did a google search on kickshifter.... Im wondering how many of these where made by rattle bars for how many different kinds of bikes.

there where about 30 different ones using that name for different bikes.  As long as I can remember the heal toe was called a kickshifter by every biker i ever knew had one...

I have been looking at them as well, and might build my own, i will call it a shiftkicker...

I had my Harley blow over in a thunderstorm once (long story).  Last year when I picked up my Valkyrie in Fort Lauderdale to ride it home to PA, at my first stop I felt the Valkyrie was sitting to upright. The first morning getting on it, it almost fell over on me.  I was very uncomfortable all the way home and was very careful on how parked it.  When I got home I took the bike to Honda for state inspection and had them look at the stand. The tech wasn't very familiar with the Valkyrie but knew something was wrong. After two visits they figured the side stand suppotr bracket was bent. They said it wan't replacable.  After some internet research I found it had happened to many others: from hitting speed bumps and jumping curbs. I found BIGBF.COM he has a great step by step slid show of how to replace the brace and has a prefabed stout replacement brace.  It's a bitch to replace; my mechanics only charged me $250 to do the work. (He's reasonable).

My bike now sites correctly. :-) and I'm not worried about it blowing or falling over.  I really don't understand the problem with it sitting in the OEM position. I just sit in the seat and upright it. I’d rather be comfortable knowing it is going to stay where and how I park it.

I twisted mine back straight years ago. I bent it doing some R&D on a single sided swingarm.
I strapped the bike down and bolted an extended pipe to the side stand mounting holes. Then pulled it forward with a couple of ratchet straps. No problem, no cost. It's been fine ever since.

Yes sir you have. I was very sorry to see you close up shop as your products were/are first rate! I have one of the second batch made of the "KickShifter" on it's second Valk now after totaling my first one. Thanks so much for all the tips and help not to mention free advise on many electrical fixes and improvements for our bikes. You are appreciated by many here. Thanks again for such a great product.
