Back in March 2011, I was laid off from work after 27 years of service. I started asking around about rolling over my 401k into an IRA account. Long story short, I finally did about two months ago and now with the market the way it is am I ever glad I did. I also got a 10% signing bonus on top of what I put in.
Retirement isn't too far away and it's a good feeling knowing I'll have LOTS of gas money to ride my Valkyrie off into the sunset.
How's everyone else doing ??

Hammered... Hard...
But, I'm in it for the long haul, I've got at least another 25 years before I can even THINK about retirement, so I'm not too worried about the day to day changes right now...

If theres anything good to come out of this is buying stocks at a very low price and have them pay out in the long run.

I lost 36K in my IRA in the month of July. I'm going broke faster than I ever thought.
OK, now whos going to bail me out,...certainly not AIG, or Chase, or General Motors.

Ever notice how 401k's and gas prices react to the market inversely? When the market is booming, the 401k goes up pennies at a time. When it tanks, the 401k goes down like a $20 whore. When oil prices spike, gas prices jump 10-15 cents a day, when they tank, gas prices go down about one penny per week Whats up wit DAT?

Guess it coulda been a lot worse-could have lost a LOT more. Not even upset much-lifes to dam short to worry about things ya got no control over anywho. Sides-when it's time fer my dirt nap-family probably be the only ones missing me. Got a roof over my head-food in the fridge and freezer-i own the phat ghurl and my car-still breathing-don't hurt takin a whiz or a dump-i love my lord and saviour jesus christ and i'm still enjoying riding fishing good B B Q ya'll get it. I got less on this earth in front of me then i got behind me. It's all good. And if i do start b-tching-ain't nobody gonna listen no how. RIDE SAFE.

I should clarify that I went with a fixed indexed annuity. For the most part sounds like most of ya are upbeat about life in general and having a place to go to like this forum helps and having a fine machine like the Valkyrie in the wind clears away all those bad days we must all indure.

It did great last year and the first of this year. It's lost a bunch of money lately though. I'm afraid the military cuts are gonna kill what's left of our economy. In this area at least, many of our best jobs are/were driven by the space program and defense. Lots of machine shops in the area and a large percentage of them do military work. I'm leaving my 401 alone and trying not to look at it. I won't need it for several years and so far it always came back better. I'm hoping it will again.

Haven't lost a cent - - moved everything to cash three weeks ago. Not making anything but not losing anything either. Waiting for the S&P 500 to fall to 600 then ride it back up.

Been in cash 15 months. Got tired of the worry and volatility... and I retired. I may never be in the market again. It's too much like the lottery or a casino these days.
If I had at least 15 years to retirement, I might feel differently.

It is doing about as well as our elected officials in Washington. And the 401K probably won't do any better until their replacements fix the stink hole in Washington!!

Wait...the Tea party is in power? Somehow, when a house of cards is beginning to fall over, the failure of the house of cards is placed on those who pointed and yelled "The House of Cards Is About To Collapse!!!" instead of being placed on those who BUILT the house of cards...

Put me in charge ...
Put me in charge of food stamps. I’d get rid of Lone Star cards; no cash for Ding Dongs or Ho Ho’s, just money for 50-pound bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away. If you want steak and frozen pizza, then get a job.
Put me in charge of Medicaid. The first thing I’d do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligations. Then, we’ll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine and document all tattoos and piercings. If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, smoke or get tats and piercings, then get a job.
Put me in charge of government housing. Ever live in a military barracks? You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair. Your “home” will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried. If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, then get a job and your own place.
In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a “government” job. It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you. We will sell your 22 inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the “common good.”
Before you write that I’ve violated someone’s rights, realize that all of the above is voluntary. If you want our money, accept our rules.. Before you say that this would be “demeaning” and ruin their “self esteem,” consider that it wasn’t that long ago that taking someone else’s money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self esteem.
If we are expected to pay for other people’s mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices. The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices.
Alfred W. Evans, Gatesville, TX
Sounds like a wise man to me
