Beautiful east Tennessee ( GOD'S Country )

« on: August 12, 2011, 03:02:19 AM »

We've rode this area several times over the years however we've never did it while following the river and close as possible.Anyone that's rode near this part of Tennessee / Kentucky knows the twisties on the backroads are outstanding. We'll also make a stop at World War 1 hero Alvin C. York's place.

The Wolf River is a 40.3-mile-long river in the U.S. states of Tennessee and Kentucky that rises at the base of the Cumberland Plateau in Fentress County, Tennessee and flows westward for several miles before emptying into the Obey River at the Dale Hollow Reservoir. The river is part of the Cumberland River drainage basin, and flows primarily in Middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky. Via the Cumberland and Ohio rivers, it is part of the Mississippi River watershed. It is not to be confused with the Wolf River of West Tennessee which flows into the Mississippi at Memphis.

The source of the Wolf River is located at the confluence of Pogue Creek and Delk Creek in a rugged hollow approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) southeast of the community of Pall Mall. Two miles below its source, the river absorbs Rotten Fork before entering the communities of Wolf River and Pall Mall, both of which are associated with World War I hero Alvin C. York. York's farm and gristmill were both located along the river at Pall Mall, and he and his family are buried in the large cemetery at Wolf River. York's farm is now part of a state historic park. Beyond Pall Mall, the river continues westward across the northeastern Highland Rim into Pickett County, passing just north of Byrdstown and flowing through a rolling area of forest and farmland. It crosses briefly into Clinton County, Kentucky, where its water becomes slack due to the impoundment of Dale Hollow Reservoir on the Obey River. The Wolf's confluence with the Obey is located just southeast of the point where Pickett County, Tennessee, Clay County, Tennessee, and Clinton County, Kentucky meet. Most of the lower half of the Wolf River comprises an embayment of Dale Hollow, which also extends into Cumberland County, Kentucky.....I took this first picture on the way to " The Whiskey Run " a couple years ago.Sgt. Alvin York family ran Grist Mill in Pall Mall, TN now a State Historic Park.

That is a great area, Joe.  Several years ago I went past the York house with my semi.  There are some great roads there.  I liked them in my Pete, and I would LOVE them on my Valk!

Two missed opportunities.  Joe and friends went to the bike fest that happens every Thursday night at Quaker Steak and Lube just a few miles from my house.  Lois had already made other plans for us.  Then, I had to work today so I missed what will be one fantastic ride!  Enjoy your ride "Wild Bunch" and take a few pics for me!

You may have heard of the Jesus of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

I think this is the Jesus of the Great Smokey Mountains (or thereabouts) (really lifelike too)

To be honest that was one of the problems with this ride folks was e-mailing me wanting to know where will you be at this time or that time....It was the entire BRP not just some of it either do the ride or don't do the ride .... It's very hard to say I'll be here at this time when group riding across 469 miles of mountains  Undecided

I think when Joe passes on.

He will have a statue built with his Valkyrie under him, like a General from a war.

And a pushbutton theme song, FreeBird of Lynyrd Skynyrd, hooked up to a motion detector.

So the Valk will live forever and Freebird will show the way to Valhalla.

But let's hope that 's not far at least 50 more years.

I can definately see where trying to "meet" up with the group could be a real problem.

Our plan was to meet everyone in Waynesboro on Friday night for the "tire kickin" and ride with the group on Saturday to about Fancy Gap and then head for home.

We can't make it a two day ride since "Ginger" has to work on Sunday.

I don't want to "hi jack" your ride from the southern end, but if anyone is in the same boat as me and would like to ride but can't make it all the way to Cherokee let me know and we'll attempt to put a ride together from the northern end.

Actually,

If you wanted to start from Asheville instead of Cherokee and ride north,  And another group rode south from Waynesboro, we could meet up about Galax, Va for dinner (I know a pretty good mom and pop place there).

That's just a thought.

If you think that it is feasable we can try to make it happen.

See if you can get something going from that end " Fred " and maybe we can hook up in the middle somewhere if possible....Trouble is finding that " somewhere " that will have rooms on a holiday weekend....If you get it figured out let me know your plans . Mine was to just get a few riders together and hope for the best when it came time to hunt a room for the night.Last time I did this ride we damn near sold out both motels we stayed at with all the folks that showed up.

If you do the math this is about as close to half way as you can get for motel, resturants etc.

The halfway point is Mahogany Rock Overlook @ MM 235.

Doughton Park @ MM 241 would be easier.

That isn't hard to do riding south from Waynesboro but it is a full days ride from Cherokee.

This place in Sparta, NC is showing rooms available Saturday night for about $65

http://www.alleghanyinn.com/

and it is the kind of "park at the door" motel that you like.

If we can manage to put this together on such short notice I think that it would be pretty cool.

That would be for Saturday night.

And you're most welcome, I just wish that we had figured this out sooner.
