I rode it two years ago, starting in Natchez and ending in Nashville.
Pavement is good and scenery terrific with lots of historic pull-offs. It's about 450 miles and the speed limit is 45 mph. I did it in one day and regretted not taking two.
I highly recommend it and intend to do it again myself one day.

I've done parts of it and am hoping to do the whole things sometime soon. No commercial traffic, no gas or stores of any kind. Plenty of places to get off for those things and get back on. Speed limit is 45 mph or something like that. Plenty of sites to stop and see/read about the history of the trace. http://www.nps.gov/natr/index.htm |

It's a great road for viewing the history of the area. I did sections as well as ride it with Joe's group. Scenery great, road speed slow (federal speeding ticket if you get stopped), and can be mesmerizing.
But there are over 200 historical sites along the way and if you add some of the Jazz trail it can be a hoot. The stop that made the biggest impression for me was "She Boss". you've got to read the story to get the humor in this stop.
I'd split it in half and stay in Tupelo MS. Good food and good places to stay.

Rode 150 miles of the northern part just about a month ago. Very nice. Little traffic, no trucks, lots to see. Two deer, one turkey, and one big furry thing that lumbered into the woods. Met some very nice folks in the towns along side the trace. Only got 50 miles to a bottle of water so I got off and on a good bit. Wish I had been on Joe's ride but I was a worker bee then. No peg draggin allowed, LOL.

Pretty and relaxing ride but deer, wild turkeys, and park rangers everywhere so it can be slow and very hot. The park rangers are national so if you get a warning or ticket on one they're all over it at the other end or any state in between if you should be stopped a second time. Tickets can also be expensive.

Hey Robin,
Judy and I spent a few days riding it last summer while visiting family in Nashville. The first 35 miles or so heading south from Nashville were some of the best curves!! It was a nice leisurely ride which is just what we were looking for......very scenic.....

Let's do it again Labor Day Weekend 2012 I enjoyed the group and the ride we rolled along most of the time around 60 mph and best I recall we did'nt see any Park Rangers the two day we passed through the entire Natchez Trace. |

. It's been a couple of years. Ride it after Labor Day and you'll have it to yourself (southern half, at least). Jill set the pace at a little over the limit but we saw only one Ranger and she sold us sodas out of the Ranger stash and directed us to a secluded spot for "a romantic picnic". Stop at the attractions and get a history lesson. |

It is a great trip if you're looking for what it can provide. It's relaxing. I travel up to northern Alabama a lot, and took the Trace several times. The last few, I took the superslab due to a lack of time. Last time, i did a hybrid route, taking part slab, part Trace. The difference was dramatic. It was cooler (due to the trees giving me shade), it was quieter at 50 mph (most of the Trace is 50, not 45, although parts are 45), and it was more relaxed without semis blasting past me. I let out an audible sigh the last time I changed from the superslab to the Trace.
I don't take it to get a thrill ride. I take it so I can cover some ground, but be relaxed by the time I get where I'm going. Low speeds=high fuel mileage=fewer stops required, so combining that with its more direct route to where I wanted to be, I can actually use the Trace and hardly lose any time despite the significant hit to my speed.
I recommend you call the Parks dept. in advance. They'll happily send you a free package with a map of the Trace. The map shows points of interest along the way, which, if you're not in a hurry, can be a nice pause point on your trip. You can also print a map off their website, or pick up a copy at several of the visitor stations along the way.
FYI: In June, the stretch between Mathiston and Dewey in Mississippi was closed off. They had a simple detour set up. No biggie.

IT CAN BE A BORING RIDE IN A CAR, SO WATCH OUT FOR ANY CAR GETTING CLOSE TO THE CENTER LINE. Several years ago friends of mine were hit head-on by an asleep driver while riding their Wing on the trace. Both suffered broken hips, ruptured spleens, etc, etc. Both spent the next 2 years using a wheel chair, walkers, crutches, and canes.
