Turned northbound on a 4 laner this morning.  The slow lane (where I was) is going faster than the fast lane.  So as Im creeping past (with the flow of traffic) this car to my left, I remember saying to myself...."self, you are entering her blind spot" I no sooner had that thought and she trys to dart over into my lane (MY PARTICULAR SPOT in my lane) WOW.....now Im like 18" from her front right wheel which has just crossed the white line.  So BLAST the stebil and before I can even let off the button she is back where she belongs and is gestering "Please dont kill me I really didnt see you"  And for once I wasnt even  mad, I knew she didnt see me.

Be Careful out there

Sad thing is...you were in her mirror blind spot...if she had done a simple head turn...she would have seen you and you wouldn't have had to test your horn.  (Sorry...this is a huge pet peave of mine...)

I am glad it worked out in your favor.

Glad it worked out for ya, Chris.

Next project for this 'self'. My IS horns are a POS. Usually, on the first press of the horn nothing happens. Second or third, a tiny bleet that cuts out quickly.

Ya Darkmeister.......I would have been in the ditch if I had to press my horn button three times to get her attention.

Joe, You are very right, but it still is easier to take than the numbnuts that pulls out right in front of you looking right at you and then says "sorry didnt see you"

There isn't anything more important to the safety of a rider than his own alert and open eyes,, being aware of the situation early enough to avert crash!  Keep on riding alert!

A loud horn like the Stebel certainly helps.  That's the first thing I put on my VStrom.

However, DO NOT count on a loud horn to keep you out of trouble, it doesn't always work!

Some time ago I was on the Valkyrie and riding at the left rear of a car that was in the right turn lane, my lane was straight through.  I could see the lady in HER rear view mirror so I know that I wasn't in her blind spot.  She did as I suspected. When the street narrowed and eliminated the right turn lane at the intersection, she whipped over in my lane, no turn signals, no nuttin'.

I blew the Rivco air horns but it made no difference. she wasn't on her cell, her window was rolled down, no loud music........she heard the horn!  Made no difference.

I was expecting that so I had opened up the lane by slowing.  When I moved over after clearing the next lane, I blew the horn again.  She looked straight ahead and had that 'deer in the headlight' look.

It would've been my fault if she would've ran over me.

Yep Solo, I wudda done the same (slow in expectation) if her lane was fixin to end, but it wasnt, there was no NEED for her to come over the line.  Im not going to slow down vs pass every car in the next lane I come up on, but I do remain aware anytime Im in someones "blindspot"

I didn't mean to pull your chain, Chris.  I've been in situations where the horn wakes them up  and I too, have had close ones from someone doing what is totally unexpected.

Because of that, I find that my right hand covers the front brake more than my left covers the horn button. cooldude

Where I live, the slow or inside lanes are ALWAYS the fastest, and I use them.    But I always run brights and am ready for the cages invariably coming over on me.

"Horn broke, watch for finger."

And I can yell about as loud as a Stebel, and my words are always more entertaining than the Stebel.

I love my quad Stebel horns, it really gets people's attention.  Like Darkmeister, my IS horn was a joke and I almost hit a deer because of it.  Now my horns will turn them inside out.

Quad Stebels?  I'm I gathering this right?  The Stebel is a dual tone horn so that's eight concurrent horns?  Must be very loud.  Shocked

Does it really? The Valk has a HD charging system so I wouldn't think a healthy Valkyrie electrical system would do that.

Marty, mine goes through a relay (provided by stebil) maybe that makes a difference, but even LONG blasts does nothing to my headlight or volt meter or anything.  Just blasts away

I've got 2 Stebels Nautilus airhorns.... one in each pod on the I/S... relayed of course, never had a power problem.

Thats plenty for me!!!  Stebel does make a car like horn... smaller...

I have no idea where you would put 4 of the Nautilus horns... they are larger than half a brick!

Mine goes through a relay also and if I hit the horn at night I can see the headlight dim; however, power for my Stebel is not coming from the battery.  It's coming from an auxiliary fuse panel .

Huh, I thoroughly enjoy testing out my Stebil horn, there is a small herd of Russian Black horses on the way to work that seem to enjoy me tootling the horn at them when ever I pass by.
I wish I could figure out a way to mount one of those Dragon Train air horns on the scooter. THAT would get the cell phone drivers attention.

There is plenty to blame if they don't look over their shoulder and check their blind spot.  Driving 101.

But your point is taken.  Don't depend on someone else.

It's sad.  My state does not require professional driver training.  And parents just seem to give their kids a ten minute lesson in the car and set them free.  My kids were so embarrassed that I gave them a few months worth of lessons before I took them down to get their licenses.  But dang, they can back up in a straight line, park, look over their shoulders and drive defensive instead of like they're in competition.

Even looking over your shoulder though you can't always see in your blind spot, depending on the vehicle you're driving.

I was off bikes for 25 years.  I put a loud horn on my trike, and also on the dragon.  What I found was that the loud horn was giving me a false sense of security.  Better to twist the wrist and/or maneuver then blow, then to blow first and scream profanities.

I'm not trying to be a wise-guy or start anything.  My answer to that  is that a good driver realizes this and does something to compensate, like a fish eye mirror if nothing else.  I've had vehicles like vans with a solid side door.  Without fail I could set the mirror so that if I leaned I could see the immediate area out the window, and what would normally be the blind area in the mirror.

I'm not trying to be a wise-guy or start anything.

No I know, I'm just pointing out that with some vehicles you may have a pillar in the way or in the case of trucks you have absolutely no way of seeing over there. You rely entirely on your mirrors.

Honestly, I use my mirrors religiously for everything, even backing up. I don't like turning my head, especially on the highway and I've found that with a big child car seat back there I can't see anything anyway. But because I monitor them the way you're theoretically supposed to I haven't punted anyone into the weeds.  Wink

When I took my drivers test for my first DL (in Hawaii)...........a U turn was required and backing up was required which was amazing for Hawaii because the written test was a joke and motocycle test was a joke, but hey hammer car drivers.......If you were to back up or make a sharp turn like a U turn WITHOUT turning your head you would fail for just that

Same in Massachusetts (at least when I got my license back in 88). For backing up or parallel parking you were required to turn your head. But for the CDL exam if you turned your head you automatically failed.

That's a situation where I drop a gear to make sure that even if they can't see me they can probably hear my Mark T's.

Very surprising sometimes how many heads I see look in their mirrors when I do that one simple thing.
