Warlock just changed the timing belts and idlers with springs on my '97 Tourer with 50K miles.  The belts and one idler were good enough to be used as spares.

I've heard varying opinions on this, but the consensus is that if it makes you feel better, then change them. They aren't that expensive and peace of mind is certainly worth something. The Valk has a zero clearance engine, so if one breaks, so does the engine.

However, my 97 has 40K on her and is still running the originals.

Change em.  My 99 had 29K on it and 10 years when I got it.  I bought the belts and opened it up.  The originals looked good.  I took them off and about 1/2 doz. of the teeth were starting to separate from the belt.  If they break you have killed your motor.  Cheap peace of mind.  The idlers on mine were fine.

Thanks everybody, I think i will change the belts and idlers just because i can.
Small price to pay after 11 years, hopefully I will change them again 11 years from now.

One more comment!!  MY '97 Tourer got her first belts change at 85K, although they "looked like new".  She got her second set at 191K and they still looked like new.  The bike is now at 240.5K and I just took a look lyesterday and they are still tensioned, clean and of course look like new.  I am still running the original tensioners etc. They are still smooth and clean.  If you are treatin' the Phat Lady good (no burn-outs etc.), she ain't gona wear out.

Just an added comment--As of last night the compression was still 160 on 5 and 155 one--Not bad for 240K!
Just change all the fluids put in some Chemtool B-12 (over 3 tanks) and don't look back!!

My kids used to ask me questions like that as they were growing up.

My response to them was, if you're worried about it, change it, or turn them on, dusk and headlights here.

MGM has 242+K on him and is only on his 2nd set of belts.........   Seems like 1 tensioner was rough in the bearing so I changed both of them.    Buddy of mine changed the 2nd set of belts.

My '01 has 50K miles on it and I just changed them.  One had a few small cracks in-between the teeth but I'm sure would have been fine for another few years.  Cost me $39 and under 2 hours start to finish.  One less thing that could seriously harm the fat lady...
