Friend sent this. A reminder of how truly young, our country is...

I've Got A Secret

If you look carefully, you can see some very subtle cigarette advertising.

This came to me, on the heels of news of the death of Albert Brown, the oldest survivor of the Bataan Death March, last week...

Albert Brown dies at 105

Nothing subtle about it at all. I was a young un at the time but i was one of my dads favotite shows. 2funny Winston was a major sponsor at that time and Gary Moore always smoked on the program. uglystupid2 This of course was well BEFORE the gubmint stepped in and banished cigarette advertising. Roll Eyes Remember-this was 1956. John Wayne-Yul Bryner and others were telling us how GOOD certain brands of smokes were. coolsmiley A lot of the T V shows at that point in time had smoking going on while it went out into T V land. crazy2 A lot of movies of that era featured high dollar actors and actresses smoking in a lot of scenes. Grin RIDE SAFE.

Yeah, was meant to be a little sarcastic... Grin

I used to collect smoking advertising, right after the ban went into affect. I had ALL kinds of stars - John Wayne, Ron Reagan, as well as doctors, sports stars, etc. There were so many, I eventually gave up on it, but it WAS fun. Of course, I would have been MUCH better off, had I collected silver coins, right after they bacame copper-clad.... Grin

I also remember people smoking in grocery stores, and it was nothing to drop your cig, and put it out on the floor of any business you happened to be in. The hardware store in our small town, had zillions of burn marks in the hardwood floors, from that.

I swiped some Pall Malls from my Grangpa when I was 8 or 9.
He never would have found out if my stupid brother had'nt been barfin and turned all green hangin on the swingset in the back yard like I was.
Look in the old pre 40's Geographics. Those ads are a hoot.

Back in the 70s, I was still in college. My dad caught a Tonight Show with Johnny Carson where the guest was a Native American who had been at the battle of Little Big Horn as a baby.
A related subject - The last Civil War Pensioner passed away just a few years ago. She was an elderly widow who had married an aged Civil War vet when she was a young girl. Her husband, who was an old man when she married him, had served during the Civil War as a young boy.

It's amazing to me that sometimes, history wasn't that long ago.

In America, we think 100 years is a long time and 100 miles is a short distance...

In Britain they think 100 miles is a long distance, and 100 years is a short time...

Thanks for posting that, fascinating...

Or, as we used to sing: "Winston tastes bad, like the one I just had", and the ending? "no filter, no flavor, it tastes like toilet paper"...

"Terryton gives you .... extra mildness"

And they claimed that Joe Camel encouraged kids to smoke.

I have heard that he is enjoying his forced retirement though:

It is Lucy. Here is a link to the whole show. It's in 4 parts.

I've Got A Secret - Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz (1/4)powered by Aeva

The amazing thing is one minute Desi is sitting there lighting up a Winston and then at the end the host reads a letter recognizing Desi and Lucy for their work the previous three years in raising money for the fight against heart disease!!
