My best friend for the past 14 years, (his birthday was this past Saturday) was diagnosed with complete kidney failure yesterday. So this morning at around 9:00am, we sent him on his way to wait for us at the Rainbow Bridge. It has been a very sad two days. Tom and Joanne Tompkins Lynchburg, VA

That sucks dude. I have been there WAY too often lately too.
It might be too early... but puppy breath sure helps.

Sorry about your loss. No, it doesn't get any easier over time. Last one I lost was a couple of years ago, a white sheppard. Seemed a foot was tender, took him in for a routine check - riddled with cancer. Never brought him back home. I can't believe how much I still miss him. With a dose of guilt over instances of impatience or yelling, or thinking he was a wuss about his 'tender foot'. Heck, I even recall his delicate, long eyelashes - a weird touch on a big dog. Such is life.

Sorry to hear about losing your pup. It's amazing the effect those furry, four-legged buggers can have on us in such a short time.

I admire you for not hanging on and making your friend suffer. Too many of us do that because we don't want to let go, not realizing that they're often suffering badly.
Sorry for your loss. I've been there a lot myself.

Sorry for your loss Bro. I've lost several furry kids in my 79 years and trust me, it does not get any easier.
The hardest one we lost was a Doberman bitch. She would meet me at the end of our 1/4 mile lane and then race me to the barn where I parked my service motor. Her little stubby tail was always wagging. She was a great baby sitter. We could have a child in bed, that stirred wrong, Peaches would come to the door where we were and make a very different growl, we knew something was wrong and followed her to the bedroom. I would like to say she saved our middle daughters life when she was about 5 or 6, but the wife won't agree. Enough on that, the gnats are getting real bad in here now.
Mom & I lost our dog on a Saturday and the next Monday, we lost our old faithful cat. Those 2 furry animals got along great, they slept together, ate together and played 90% of the time, really entertaining us. We decided to not have any more furry kids, we decided to just enjoy the grandkids and their furry buddies.
Sorry for getting so long winded here. It looks like I was trying to steal the link, but I wasn't, it just brought back several memories, that I wanted to share.

Sorry, take a tennis ball with you when you go to the bridge. I am. I'm guilty of the crime of waiting too long. Buzz was a large pit/something mix. He was a wonderful peaceful dummy. I found him and the vet said he'd been on the street for 3 months or so. All his hair fell out and two weeks was all the vet gave him. 14 years later he laid down on a friday. He ate and drank and I thought he was gonna be ok. Monday morning he was not moving alot so I took him in. One of the worst days of my life.

After having to put a cat down, a friend where I worked gave me this. It helped a bit.
People who don't understand Can never know the pain But all the love you gave your pet Was never done in vain
For you have special memories Of good times that you shared And her life was long and good and full All because you cared
Where she sat - but sits no more I know it hurts to see And all the love she took and gave Is now a memory
But special loves don't ever die And special friends don't part And in the place you made for her She sits now in your heart
So when your sorrow eases some And it seems a better day Look back and smile - remembering her And be glad she came your way

Tom & Joanne -
You have our deepest sympathies and our most sincere condolences. Cats and dogs are so much more than animals, they are truly family, with all that implies.
A week ago today we had to put down our 17 year old cat, Alfie, due to the exact same cause. He was a rescue cat and was the fourth cat we have lost in the past fourteen months. All were 15-17 years old. The day we went to pick him up, I held him in my arms and he climbed up to my beard, started kneading my jaw with his paws and tried to nurse in my beard! That was all it took - he went home with us fifteen minutes later.
We're now down to one cat and two labs - a black one and a yellow one. Prayers up for y'all.

Sorry to hear that Tom. I've had to put several of our furry babies down and it doesn't get any easier. They become such an integral part of our lives that its too painful when they have to go, but time will help. A little.

One of my favorite quotes...
"It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life, gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are."

There a no real soothing words for the loss of a best friend. Yet there a plenty of good memories and when I think of my best friend I cherish those the most. Here is a picture of my best friend Ranger, we we're inseparable for 13 years. I'm sorry for your loss.

So sorry. Swore to never have another after our Rottie, Shana of 14 years. After 8 months we had to have another. Here's Allie who we rescued and 1 of her pups we kept as she was pregnant with 9 when we got her.

My deepest sympathies, Tom. Time does help, but it takes quite a bit of it. It's been 5 years since I had to send our Golden over the Rainbow Bridge. I still miss him terribly and think about him every day. Thoughts are with you.

We have had to send many of our beloved pets to the same Bridge. A Cocker Spaniel, we had her 12 years, 3 Golden Retrievers, 1 we had 11 years and 2 only a very short 7 years. Hope to be with all of them again some day also. We know of the heart ache you speak, they were all of them a part of our family!
