Robin,

We have power here, but got to work in Pa today and our complex had no power...bg cheese says, you ave to stay or you have to use personal time.

Sat in the dark at the office for 8 1/2 hours...doing nothing...

Electric complany says, that since we are not in a life support location we (company) is low on the list.

Good luck
Get out and ride if the roads are clear...

A few years back we had a nasty ice storm up here in the northeast. At the time I was working in Westfield, MA during the week and coming home on weekends (120 miles). That Friday morning I got a call from the wife telling me that trees were down everywhere back home, there was no power and the prognosis was long term outage. We got hit in western MA but apparently nothing like southern NH.

I headed home immediately but on my way I stopped at a local Home Depot and grabbed THE LAST GENERATOR they had, a 6500 watt Robin engine model. People were coming from as far as southern Vermont looking for them and I got the last one. Maybe one of the smartest things I've ever done. The entire Mass Pike was a crystal forest on either side all the way to Worcester. It really was beautiful. But as I got closer to home the damage was more evident. Everything that wasn't shattered on the ground hung low and glistened with a thick coat of ice. It rained ice continually from every tree in the neighborhood as the day warmed up just enough to cause the ice to slide free. My front yard was an absolute disaster. There was so much downed wood that the pile I made in the spring stood six feet tall, ten feet wide and 25 feet long.

Really, it was far, far worse than any hurricane because it was in the middle of winter as in the summer you're not as likely to freeze to death (duh). There was extensive grid damage to the point that on my way back out to Westfield early Monday morning I passed power trucks coming the other way from as far away as Ohio to help. Parts of my town wound up being without power for over two weeks. We went almost a week here which is unheard of. But thanks to having the generator I was at least able to keep the furnace and refrigerator going along with some lights so we stayed warm and didn't lose the food. The worst part was being without working toilets for three days while they worked to restore power to the town well pumps.

But the funny thing is that it was almost completely unpredicted. And yet, we get weaksauce blows like Irene shoved down our throats for a week.

Was without power for 14 days after Wilma at least it was cool but about the 7th day was able to get a 6500 watt generator. If you could find a generator they were going for a premium price just like your finding. Gas was another problem because no stations had generators and the ones that did were constantly running out. Had to go to North Florida before I was able to get enough to last awhile. But at the beginning of this year I picked up a 16k whole house unit that runs on natural gas, runs everything including the a/c. Grin Thought I was going to have to use it on Irene because for the little wind we had the power go out across the street and to about 400 other houses. Power companies dont do trimming anymore so the least little wind knocks out the power.

No, I'm in southern NH. Turner's falls is nortwestern MA, Closer to southern Vermont. But I know that area. I actually heard today that southern Vermont took a whallop from Irene.

We were 17 days with no power after Ike hit the Texas gulf coast..... hope Y'all get power back soon!!!!!
My welding machine puts out 11kw and was able to run the house..... but gasoline is pricey and hard to find after a hurricane......it would have been cheaper to throw all the food away than to try to save it....LOL...We should have had a party and cooked all the food!!!!! cooldude coolsmiley
Best Wishes!!!!!! cooldude

I'm in Woodstock, in NE Connecticut. 99% of the homes in Woodstock have no power. Learned our lesson after Gloria, in '85 when we had no power for over a week. Sad

Bought a 7,000 watt Generator, which pretty much runs everything in the house as long as I don't run it together. At least we have running water, heat, refrigeration, stove, etc. So, while it is not perfect, it beats what some of my neighbors have - notta!

We have plugged in an extra fridge in the garage, and offered it for those trying to keep some of their stuff. Also, offered showers and water for those without. Looks as though this time we may be out at least as long as with Gloria. Sad Angry

What would have happend if we had gotten what had been forecast? This was supposed to be sustained 80+ mph for hours and hours on end. It would have been "good night Irene" (oh man, that was bad, but it just happened, sorry!) Roll Eyes

Anvil, I remember that Ice storm and have some pics of it somewhere. I had business in the Leominster and Clinton, MA area. It was almost total devastation. I also do business in Manchester, NH, and Milford, NH, and that area was worse! It took weeks to get some of the areas up and running again. And I agree, at least we are not freezing at this time.

Yeah I'm only about 15 minutes from Manchester and Milford.
