I want to sell my Shadow but I;m hesitant for this very reason. Maybe just take the prospective for a ride and show them it runs, goes through the gears and stops OK. Maybe ride beside with the .45 in the shoulder holster and a few drops-o-gas in the shadow. Maybe just keep two bikes that are Jade and Cream and look great in the garage.

Luckily, I don't have a test drive horror story, but I hate that part of selling a used bike. I don't buy a bike without riding it but I'm always hesitant to let someone else have a test ride. Luckily, I'm not selling anything again for quite a long time.

I can see selling a basket case that you've come to accept you'll never put back together but... You mean.... Some people actually SELL perfectly functional motorcycles?!?!?!

when i was in the horse business I had the same prollem.. tho it was mostly for physical liability to the prospective buyer.. so B4 they got on they had to give me cash or check for the agreed amount.. I gave them a bill of sale transferring ownership, which we both signed .. at the bottom of the bill of sale it stated that after 15 minutes of riding if they werent completly satisfied I would refund thir money in full.. PROBLEM SOLVED

I believe if the guy showed up on foot, I wouldn't let him test ride the bike!
I always let potential buyers test ride, I do hold their drivers license till they come back, and I have insurance binders on all bikes that I sell.

I do the same thing, I require a DL and a credit card to test ride. I call it my 15 minute warranty and I go along with them on my bike.

I've bought used bikes and I've sold used bikes. Test ride involved in all transactions. Never had a problem. Either I've been lucky or this is a rare occurrence.

You've been fortunate. My dad had someone he knows come to see a bike he was selling. Insisted he could ride. Climbed on and took off across the street and up and into the neighbors hedges before dropping it. Got up saying "I'll buy it, don't worry". Imagine if it's someone you don't even know......

I was selling a Suzuki Volusia 2 yrs ago when a guy that was paralized on his right side drove up wanting to do a test ride. He walked, basically swinging his right leg and dangeling a mostly limp arm. The guy claimed that he had ridden other bikes and he had enough gross control to work the throttle and brakes. The dude then showed me cash and asked to give it a try.
Ain't no way. Sorry. Put your money up. Nothing against anyone disabled, I just couldn't let him try it out.
I saw the guy a month later on a Can-Am. Haven't seen him since.
Sometimes the money just isn't worth it.

when I test drove my present valkyrie, the owner (a NJ cop) had a friend (also a cop) follow right behind me
I had driven to the meetup place in my car after the mile or so test ride he followed me on the bike 30 miles home with his friends still behind my car and I gave him the cash for the bill of sale and title. I paid what he asked using the ins. $ from the 2000 that was totalled Had enough left over to buy the shoei helmet and some bling
I live on a dead end street, I let the fellow who wanted my 750 ride the rest of the way down to the dead end and back, he left me his car keys when he got on the bike.
Cant believe the person did not even know the name of the fella that stole his bike, what the heck was he thinkin

It so simple, most all bikes have a rear seat. One of you rides there if you don't trust the buyer to come back or that he can handle the bike.
I sold my KLR without the guy ever riding it other than "bitch".

Don't know what insurance but if it's Progressive that I have read the fine print. In the policy it specifically states the insurance is NOT BINDING if vehicle is being and allowed for test ride. I read my policies all the way thru, something most don't do.
