Well...  I washed my bike, mowed the yard, watered the driveway, watered the foundation, ran the sprinklers, and even took the rain gear out of the saddlebag.   Embarrassed   It must be my fault.  Sorry...  But, as it has been said before, "If you don't ride in the rain, you don't really ride."

To make up for it, I guess I'll have to go for a ride.  I'll be solo - Janet is staying home with our sweet little puppy/daughter who is still recovering from non-infectious meningitis - so I'm registered and booked down the road where RainMaker & 5_19 are.

...unless someone wants to split a ground-zero room with a rumored snorer.  OK, acknowledged snorer.   Roll Eyes

Heading toward Possum Kingdom to scout a motel and then down through Strawn (lunch???), Brownwood, and Brady.  Depending on the rest of the week I might even leave out Thursday afternoon.  I'm really looking forward to some backroads saddle time and seeing everyone.

Thanks, Pat.  That just might work!   cooldude

Hey Jim, I sure do miss you and Sly.   Sad   I don't think I'll wander that far off path, but it's nice to know I'd have a destination.  Thanks

Just browsing the web for events in the hill country area this weekend, found a cool link:
http://www.hill-country-visitor.com/Bandera_Texas/events/?type=0&from=05102011&to=15102011

Cowboys on main in Bandera on Saturday afternoon sounds like a fun time to me; and then there is the cowboy chuck wagon dinner if we really wanted to be like cowboys.  But no matter what we do or what roads we ride, I KNOW we'll be havin us a fine time in the hill country.  Can't wait to see everybody!

Is it too late for me to "frog-in" for the day on Saturday?  Sho-nuff would be glad to meet a few folks. Other than Geezer I haven't met anyone.

X'cept maybe Hotglue years and years ago... when the crust of the earth was still unformed and soft...

(Long story!)

When and where do I need to be to make the connection Saturday AM?

Unless there is violent objection, we'll roll out of the YO parking lot at around 9 AM.
We'll do the same thing as last year, with a "relaxed" and a "spirited" group.   As I described them last year, the relaxed group is for those who want to have a nice relaxing day.  The spirited group will be trying to determine how many turns it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop rider's footpeg.
The relaxed group will leave a little before the spirited group, so as to converge on lunch at roughly the same time. It's up to each individual to decide which group to join.  If you change your mind halfway through the day, lunch break is a good time to switch groups.

Schedule for the remainder of the weekend to follow in a separate post.

ATTN:  All times are my best intention, but may change as restaurants may tell me they can't accomodate us at the intended time, etc.  I will do my best to communicate changes, but this is the best idea I can give folks now.

Most people arrive on Friday afternoon.  We will be gathering for dinner on Friday night.  We can ride over as a group, leaving the parking lot at 6:30.
After dinner, there will be plenty of tire kicking in the parking lot until folks give up and go to bed.  Saturday morning, we'll depart for the ride, ~9 AM.
Return from the ride will be in the mid to late afternoon timeframe, with another dinner scheduled for Saturday evening.  More tire kicking on Saturday night after dinner.
Sunday morning, some folks get together for breakfast, while some get an early start home.  I like the idea of catching breakfast before bugging out, and will likely be recruiting a crowd to join me.
Travel home on Sunday.

I hope that gives folks an idea of what to expect, even if it is somewhat generic.  It's not a complicated weekend.  Just good folks getting together, riding, eating, and BSing.  Good times.

I am so sorry for appearing pesky and of near moronic intelligence... but everyone keeps talking about "The YO hotel IN Kerrville..."

Having been that way a time or fifty, it is my understanding that the YO Ranch is west out hwy 41 quite some distance from town...

Am I correct in this evaluation or am I just missing some detail about downtown Kerrville?

We are talking about the Lodge out at the YO RANCH as the rally point Saturday morning.... correct?

Just to clarify, the YO Ranch is a different location than the Hotel. 2033 Sidney Baker  I believe is the same as Hwy 16

Gotcha...  I usually loop "under" Kerrville through Comfort on my way to Big Bend.  I tend to stay away from towns of any size.

Yes, that's correct.  It's on 16, just a bit south/west of I-10.  That is ground zero, and is the "parking lot" I referred to multiple times.

My plans are to be in Johnson City at the Texaco station just to the west of the 281/290 intersection between 2:30 and 3:00PM Friday afternoon, hopefully to meet up with some Austin riders and head to Kerrville from there.

Seems Bullgoose is not up to snuff so won't be making the trip.  So I may change the route.  Don't wait for me in Johnson City!

Dam???  What's a dam?  Oh yeah... it's a structure for accumulating run-off?  Come on... surely you are not expecting to see standing water anywhere on or near our route?

Living here in San Marcos, I can attest, it just hasn't been that sort of DECADE out here in the hill country...  we are gripped in the worst drought in recorded history.... dead trees... and bone dry is what you should expect.  It might rain... but that will not fill the tanks and/or river dams overnight.  We'd need WEEKS of serious rain 1+ inches per day to do that...

Bring your canteens and your sunscreen... this is no longer the Texas Hill Country you remember and love...

Same here! About 30 miles into my trip my bike just kinda died in front of a auto parts store, gas station and Chevrolet house on the main drag in Comanche, TX. Turned out the alternator wasn't charging and the Autopart store had a new battery in stock. I was able to install the new battery and get back home.

Did you know that the group in Kerrville has 2 yes TWO spare alternators amongst them and that Wizard can change one in 45 minutes in the parking lot.
I haven't take them up on that offer because I am about 200 miles away and at home however right now I am seriously considering finding a fully charged truck battery strapping it to the back of the bike, run some wires and see if I can make it.

Either way the offer of support is fantastic. Thanks  cooldude cooldude cooldude and thats why I ride a Honda Valkyrie!

Just got finished taking a real good look at the problem with the charging system on my bike. Good news it NOT the alternator. Our bikes have a 50Amp fuse that connect the alternator to the electrical system. The link on my bike was broke and after I fixed it VOILA it's charging again. With everything powered up om my bike the alternator is charging about 22 Amps at 13.7vdc. Me think everything is a ok!

Hondahead check the 50 Amp fuse and make sure it's not broke!!!!!

Just made it to Kerrville. It's 2:30 pm and I haven't seen any Valkyries yet! They must be having fun in the hills. It rained the first 150 miles. It's good to know that washing your bike makes it rain. I suggest everybody in Texas please wash your bike and car or whatever you have. IT WORX!  Evil cooldude

tj and i decided to try one of the sisters on sat. morning and went on our own.  too rainy to be having any fun so we headed back to motel and decided to head home.  ran into a few showers but we were dry through san antonio, thank you God.  we took I10 and headed n. at brookshire to 290 to home.  safe and sound. at one leg, with the headwind and cruizing around 85, i hit reserve at 95 miles!   Shocked  but we made it home without incident, again, thank you Lord.
praying for a safe trip home for the rest of the crew.
albeit it short, we had a good time riding out and fellowship.
mark, you were supposed to pick the dry weekend, remember? Wink

About 8AM Sunday morning now... the weather maps is ALL green.  It's raining to beat the band here in San Marcos.  Sorry the weekend was such a drag... but I am glad that I got to meet a few folks yesterday...

After leaving strolled up to F'burg hooked over through Luchenbach and rode my usual "gauntlet back in"  Rained off and on all the way.

WHOAH Alternators everywhere!!!  Do therse things fail all the time??

Thanks for the offers, I thought I'd have it back in time but the alternator shop really let me down and never even got back to me after promising twice.

I'll go check that fuse again just to be sure......

BJ and I made it home this afternoon safe and sound, but soaking wet.  So is the YARD!!!  Woohoo!!!  Finally getting some rain and glad to have ridden through it if that is the reason we finally got some.  The Hill Country Ride takes full credit. Sorry Disco, all of that stuff you did helped, but the ride put it over the top.

Check in when you make it home safe.
