Custom1,

As of now I have the rear of the tank a couple inches higher than where it should sit. Figured there was no point in bolting it down in case I needed to pull it off again. How long do I have to orally stimulate The Lady in order to get the reaction I'm hoping for. :-)

Aaaaand.....we have rumble! :-)

I am getting some gas leaking from the carbs. And is hesitates when I give it a lot of gas. But I have ~2 gallons of premium gas in there along with a half bottle of Techron.

I'll give it a couple of days to let the o-rings (hopefully) swell up, and then I should be good to go.*

Thanks all.
John

* Once I get tires, brakes and clutch refilled and bled, final drive oil filled up. Oh, and new license plates.

"As long as it takes" ...has been my experience.

It's good to have a sense of humor about it. The bike I mean.

Fuel starving might be that quick connect.

Day two:
  • No more gas leaking from carbs. Looks like the o-rings did indeed swell up and reseal.
  • Still runs rough.
  • Idles at around 300 RPM.
  • It will die if I leave it running unchoked.
  • Rolling hard on the throttle from idle also causes it to stutter and hesitate, tho not always to die. If I roll on hard from 1500 RPM it has no problems.
I'm suspect that once the Techron runs thru that will help with the rough running. Looks like I need to up the idle speed as well.

custom1, I don't think I have a fuel starving issue, so I'm leaving the quick-disconnect in. It fired right up this morning. (What I need is a quick connect for that tank drain hose so that I can connect it somewhere else. It's a pain getting my hands in there.)

Off to search for some good ol' ME880s...

the rough running and stumbling on opening the throttle are indicative of plugged slow jets...the Techron may or may not help.  In my experience, the chemical "solution" has been a waste of time and money, however installing new jets has been a sure fix.

You've really been given a lot of proper recommendations regarding the carbs, but it appears you haven't acted on it....

Most of the recommendations have been to let the techron act for a bit and go from there. If I can avoid the carb work, all's better. So I am acting on it.

Worst case I pull 'em off and clean them up later. Best case it works. The carbs were drained, the fuel had stabilizer in it. So, fingers crossed.

You know if that bike hasn't been operated for awhile, it might be good to fog those cylinders with a touch of oil. A little squirt of WD 40 would do the job.

Added brake fluid to the front brakes and bled them the other day. Front left is seized up.

Guess it's time to buy some caliper rebuild kits. May as well get them both cleaned up.

Grrr.

Are left and right really different seal/o-ring kits?

Well.....I'm all done on the outside of the bike. Brakes, fluids, tires, etc. Had to replace one of the shock rubber bushings. (I put a Mitvac Fluid Evacuator on my Christmas list!)

Gave up and passed it along to a friend's Mechanic God to look at it. He confirmed that I had indeed drained the carbs a few years ago (Yea me!), as they really weren't that bad. Just a bit of build-up in the jets. He's going to sync the carbs this weekend and I'll get it back Sunday or Monday most likely.

He's also double checking everything I did (I did good!) and giving it a once-over to make sure I didn't miss anything. A bit of a safety check for peace of mind.

And it even looks good for riding all next week!

w00t!

Well, I am back on the road again! Kudos to Massimo for finishing things up, balancing the carbs, and tuning everything up.

Runs great!
