can anyone tell me what the outcome would be between a HD Vrod and a Valkyrie I  hear they are a porch motor on a HD.  It would have to be to out run the fat lady.

Yes, they are a Porshe motor, and yes if both bikes had the same experience and riding abilities, the VRod, would kick the Valkyrie's butt.

My brother had a vrod. It wouldn't even be close!  Vrod will walk away, maybe even run away...

I found one web page that said a standard Vrod has 109 Hp at the rear wheel and 74 ft lbs of torque, with a wet weight of 615 lbs. If I assume a 200 pound rider, all up, that's (200 + 615)/109 = 7.5 pounds per horsepower.

For the Valk, 100 Hp, 96 Ft Lbs, and a wet weight of about 700 pounds. If we assume 200 pounds of rider and gear, it's (700 + 200)/96 = 9.4 pounds per horsepower.

The Valk has to haul 9.4 - 7.5 = 1.9 more pounds with each horsepower, so it must take a bit longer to get to any given speed. My estimate is that the Vrod is (9.4/7.5)*100 = 125% quicker acceleration than the Valk, given equal riders.

Of course, the Valk rider gets where he is going without a numb butt! Grin

In the end, I would not want to put much money against the Vrod.

You didn't use the same method for the Valk, used torque in place of the HP. But the Vrod still comes out on top.

I can say though that from a standing start the Valk will be easier to launch so that may count for something.

The VRod is damn quick though and a nice handler.

You might be able to win with a good plan...

In the TV show "Pinks" where they race for pink slips here is how it went vs an old Suzuki 1100:

1983 Suzuki GS1100 against a 2002 Harley V-Rod

Best 2 out of 3 - 1/4 mile drag races.

No ET's or speeds (No clocks are used on the show)

1st race - Heads Up, Harley wins with a better jump at the start by 5 lengths.

2nd race - Heads up, Suzuki wins by 5 lengths! Harley claims clutch is overheating.

3rd race - 15 minute break for the Harley to "Cool Off". Harley gets 1 bike length.

Harley gets the jump at the start line.

Suzuki gets the front end up in first 100 feet down the track.

Suzuki wins race by 2 lengths!

1983 Suzuki owner goes home with a 2002 Harley V-Rod!

I've punched it out with my buddy who rides a v-rod many times. 0-70 is very close, depends on who got the jump. As soon as I hit 3rd he starts to pull me. It's by no means an ass whippin', His v-rod is only a little faster. my bike is pretty stripped down, Solo seat, no bags or windshield and his still feels like a ten-speed compaired to my fat lady.

It's not about straight line speed. Anyone can go fast in a straight line.

A good rider on a Valkyrie will leave a good rider on a V-Rod in a long series of twisties.

The V-Rod doesn't have the ground clearance unless you want to start hitting hard parts.

Yes, I've ridden a V-Rod.

IF you base a bikes appeal only on how it compares to a Harley.

You are selling the Valk out way to cheaply.

More passenger and rider room than a Ultra Classic.

Looks and Rides like a real motorcycle, not a tupperware torpedo.

Does everthing well and some things are in the excellant category.

It will suck the dried oil off a Harley at highway speeds.

Valk is a legend in it's own time.

Only thing out there that is like it is well ,,nothing.

But don't sell it short by just comparing it to a Harley.

My buddy has a 2010 V-Rod, we ride together often. It is fast & I am sure depends on who's riding it. Never the less, for me I'll keep my Valk. He used to have a V-star 1100 but got tired of getting spanked, now I guess it's my turn. Oh well, speed isn't the only thing & I love my Valk!

I have played with a V rod, first in the straight line.  Got beat all 3 times, one pretty bad beating.  Yes they are pretty quick in a straight line.  I will stick with my 1999 standard, best all around bike I have ever owned or ridden.

In my one experience running against a V Rod the Valk came out on top.

Of course I was running 125 mph +, so the V Rod rider may have lost his nerve.

The curve at the end of the straight away that I took at 110 mph (lots of pucker factor) might have had something to do with it.

Yup

My son-in law has a SE Vrod and your post seems the most correct and  matches my riding experience with the Valk vs Vrod ... which we do a hell of a lot of.
Its all about getting to the RPM powerband 1st.

But when we throw our wifes on with us and go for a evening cruise  ... well ... we always end up snapping the throttles sooner or later and the Vrod falls a little short of the Valkyrie.

So if you want to beat a Vrod with a Valkrie ... go on a diet ... drop a few pounds .. and look for some tubby Vrod rider.

Maybe check out some drivethoughs at Wendys, BurgerKing or McDonalds to start with.

I have raced against V Rods in the straights. Illinois is all straight anyway, for the most part. I got spanked, but not hard. I cannot claim to be riding Valks long enough to be very competent racing them, but the V Rod is a quick ride.
If you want to ride all day though, the Valk is comfy!
I read that you have to pull the engine on the V Rod to do the valve adjusment. If so, that's an expensive proposition that Valk riders don't have to worry about.

u have to drop the bottom front engine supports and then rotate the engine down to the deck. stealer price $500-700. some v-rod sites state the valves are good for 20-25k btwn adjustments.

In the TV show "Pinks" the 2002 Harley V-Rod rider lost his bike to a 1983 Suzuki 1100:

Best 2 out of 3 - 1/4 mile drag races.

No ET's or speeds (No clocks are used on the show)

1st race - Heads Up, Harley wins with a better jump at the start by 5 lengths.

2nd race - Heads up, Suzuki wins by 5 lengths! Harley claims clutch is overheating.

Suzuki gets the front end up in first 100 feet down the track.

Suzuki wins race by 2 lengths!

1983 Suzuki owner goes home with a 2002 Harley V-Rod!

Better make your race best 2 out of 3 or 3 out of 5!

I could own a V-rod. I just let every one know that the bike I ride is My 1st Choice, but I respect their choice. V-rod riders catch more crap from the stereotypical H.D. guys than I do !

Why don't you guys check out what the pro's said when they tested these bikes years ago.  Go to the end and see the scores.  The valk scored the highest when comparing all aspects of riding a motorcycle. My other bike, a Magna held it's own.  Not everything is a drag race.

http://www.motorcyclecruiser.com/roadtests/performance_cruiser_comparison/index.html

Here's another article you might find interesting:
http://www.motorcyclecruiser.com/roadtests/flagship_cruiser_comparison/index.html

Just remember that a 16 year old kid on a $6900 Honda CBR600RR will smoke either a Valk or a V-Rod but it won't take two people on a 1000 mile trip.  Neither will a V-Rod.  Each bike has it's own purpose.

My personal experience was testing the V-Rod when it first came out.  Now I ride a Valk IS and a Magna but at that time I did not own the Valk.  I found that the V-Rod did not handle anywhere near as well as my Magna.  Last year at Arizona bike week I rode another V-Rod and I believe it still does not handle as well as the Magna or my 99 Valk IS.  While a V-Rod will go like hell in a straight line, sooner or later you need to go around some curves and it does not handle those as well as other bikes though I believe it does so better than the V-Max that I rode several years ago.
