Since Ghillie's shop isn't available except for the Texas Ride In weekend on October, I thought I'd see how much interest there is for a WP on Sept. 24th.  I'll offer my driveway in Allen if there is enough interest and need.

Other:

Kitchen passes for 9/17 and 10/7-10/9 would be in jeopardy if I attend.  However, I would like to put my new u-joint in and check the pinion cup before the Hill Country Ride.  So, if it happens, I'll attend.  Else, I'll do a solo wrench party.

Hummmm... I might have a couple of things I need to do to mine.... like get the whole final drive back together since it couldnt be done while I we were in Cody, Wy.

Think this is possible? I got the "Box o'parts"  to replace the pinion cup flange set and seal to put it back together. Not sure what else I might need.

One option is to have it at my place.  Not sure of the logistics Larry will need to get his bike to Allen from the other side of Ft Worth.  Just making it available.

I wouldn't be able to make it on the 24th. It's my niece's 2nd birthday, and my brother is throwing her big party that I have to attend, AND it's my wedding anniversary so I'm booked all day... 2funny

I voted I don't need no steenkin' WP, but I could be available to help.  If it turns out I can't make it, I will arrange a football hand-off.

The 24th is one of the balloon fest days in Dublin and that sounds interesting to me.

If Larry's bike is in pieces, it would probably be much easier for us to go to him than vice versa.

Chris, I still have your goodies.

Is LP Larry's bike in pieces?  How will he get them to your house?  I don't mind having it at your place if that is necessary for Larry to get his chores done.

The bike shop put the rear tire back on it and semi back together(minus the pinion gear that is in the "box o'parts"). Its roll-able so once its latched down on the trailer, it can go anywhere.

Wanna do this at your house Randy?  It'll shave about half of the drive off for Larry.

Cool. I'll get it at the next WP we're both at, or if someone needs before then they can have it.

I spoke with Larry this evening, and he doesn't have a good setup for a WP, so we can have it at mine.  If its decided its is the official location email me if you need an address at ThagAndy@centurytel.net . I'll be out of town this weekend, so if you send an email then, I'll reply on Sunday evening.  I cant guarantee a hot breakfast like last time yet, but I'm sure we'll at least have coffee.

If there is anyone who is pretty familiar with the innards of the final drive and replacing the pinion cup / splines that would be helpful and much appreciated to get some advice at least.  When the independent cycle shop in Cody WY. tried to put it together, the wheel would not turn when spun and there were pieces left over.

Can any of the "extra" parts be identified in this graphic?  (which can also be viewed here with part numbers and descriptions)

14 and 19 were not put in place.. there is a new gear(#6) that goes on the end of the drive shaft they didnt have the tools to break the shaft to remove/replace the gear. They also thought that there maybe a need for additional spacers (#18) to adjust gap in the pinion gear but that was coming from someone that didnt know where the extra parts went.

I was expecting #13 to be the failed part from the final drive graphic.  Was it?  Were the parts comprising #6 bad, too, or are the new ones "just in case"?

What about anything here?  (here with part numbers and descriptions).

They also thought that there maybe a need for additional spacers (#18) to adjust gap in the pinion gear but that was coming from someone that didnt know where the extra parts went.

This reassembly is a complicated procedure and spacing and angles are critical.  Shimming may be requried and special "ink" is necessary to make sure mating surfaces on the gears are aligned properly.

I think this is beyond what can be accomplished at a wrench party.  I don't believe any of us has dismantled and re-assembled a rear drive.   Daniel may have, but I certainly haven't. From what I've read on the VRCC tech board, only Ricky-D and a couple of others have attempted it.

Lucky_1_Chris has a friend on the VTX board that rebuilds their rear drives and can probably do a Valk rear drive.   I think the fastest way to get this done is to try and hook up with him.

Otherwise, I'd be willing to give it a try, but it may take awhile.

I talked with Valkpilot on the ride to Cushing and he suggested I use some progard in it first.  I have having some popping around 2500 rpms, hoping the progard will do what the seafoam has not yet

I have a really great chance to make this one. (85% and growing)  The other half is going to Houston so I won't be hurried. Grin  I live north of 820 just off of Western Center.  Anyone in that area I can ride over with??  Let me know.

Disco,

We never saw #13, when they removed the wheel and saw how bad these parts were that what they called as being bad..(See pics below)
It was the inside of cup part of #6 the big pinion gear drive, and all that came as a set. The Pinion gear wasnt bad, so as a last ditch effort they tried to take the cup out and put it in the old pinion ring gear hoping that would match up but after 30Tons on the press, they couldnt get the new cup out.
I have a lift i will bring....but now I'm not so sure about working on the bike.

Larry,

I'm with Valkpilot on this.  Your final drive should be repaired by someone who's done it before.  Let's get it done right, then put it on a regular maintenance schedule so it will look like these in another 150,000 miles, or so.  http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,33188.new.html#new

I emailed the link to this thread to lucky_1_chris and asked about contact info for his VTX resource.

I talked to Showtime, and he said that he wouldn't be able to do the Valk rear ends at this time. The VTX finals are on the opposite side, and he wouldn't be able to test them after rebuilding with the setup he has.

Chris,
Thanks for thinking about me concerning the drive. I would love to be able to help out with the Valk guys, and I am sure my Honda special tools will work with that final, but I am certain my home made holding fixtures and testing fixture will not do the job...............................the spacing and orientation to it all is different between the two bikes.

Sorry,
Steve

the classified's here to ..a lot of valkyries get triked and the drive units / whole rear ends are sold off.

We have 1 jack, 1 jack adapter (I still have JC's along with his straps, and HD visor he left from last time).  Larry bought one this weekend and will bring it if he still decides to come over.  Just email or message me for an address.

We will officially start at 8am.  We will have some sort of breakfast and some drinks (maybe some Dublin DP I picked up on my way back from Fredericksburg this weekend if HollyDay feels like sharing).  Lunch is undetermined atm.  If you can, please shoot me an email or message so we can get a headcount.  Thanks and seeya Sat.

Well... The WP was moved to Randy's house for LPL's sake and I started a small project that blossomed into a big one AND I had to order parts that won't be in until Thursday/Friday sooooo.....

Hopefully I'll get her back together Saturday because I sure miss riding her to work everyday.
