Is the water pump on the Valk driven mechanically somehow or is it electric?

Mechanically driven water pump, on the front of the engine, next to the oil filter.

It runs off a fork that is driven by the oil pump. 2 bolts hold the cover on and 2 hold it to the engine. Drain both anti-freeze and oil before pulling it !   uglystupid2

Thank y'all very much., I'm not sure that's my problem but something is messed up somewhere. It might even be the temp sender. My temp light came on yesterday but the bike didn't seem to be running all that hot. I'm going to change out the coolant and see if the light comes back on. I bought an infrared thermometer today to check engine temp.

The early Valks have a problem with the light coming on even though there's no overheating problem. I've been dealing with this for several years.

art708.....go to the honda micro-fich, go to the wire harness section....look for part # 16.....this is honda # 38710-MZO-003...it's called an indicator unit......take yours out, plug this in, and bingo...no more light.  make sure first that you have checked out the obvious: there's antifreeze, etc..  good luck.

I will just add that most of the time the pump fails, there is a "leak" at the weep hole.  Mine did this and only overheated once abut was low on fluid.  The pump was pretty expensive, but was super easy to replace.  It took longer to drain the fluid through the smallish drain hole than it took to swap out the pump.

Remember, like Wizard says, don't forget to drain the oil or you will have a huge oil mess on your hands.

I needlessly replaced my pump!!  Check your connections first and then if still getting flickering or solid light and no real heat issue , replace the sender unit.

I changed the coolant last night and started the bike. I watched the coolant as it got hotter and saw that the thermostat opened and the coolant was circulating so I'm assuming (there's that word) that the thermostat and water pump is working. The coolant level was down in the reservoir .... due to my not checking it during this hot summer we've had...my own neglectfulness. I will go for a ride tomorrow or Monday, weather permitting, and check it out. I really think that it will be ok now that I have the coolant levels where they should be. It won't take long to find out once I start riding. Thanks for all the response and input.

Went for a ride today. While idling I noticed a drip from around the water pump. It's very slight but over time it could leak the coolant down. I ordered a new water pump and will also pull the radiator and check for other leaks when it arrives.

I mentioned this in an earlier post--Before paying for a new water pump, check the "O" ring on it.  That is all that mine needed, which I discovered AFTER buying the new pump!!

Earl.....that's probably what mine needed also.  Maybe I'll pull it and check. I guess I could probably sell the new pump kit to someone at a discount if the  O ring fixes it.
